Set at the beginning of the twentieth century, two lovers are forced apart by the girl, Emily's uncle who has taken over the farm after her father abandons his family and farm to escape the mounting debts. Emily's uncle is cruel and vindictive, although as the story progresses, he is eventually sidelined while Emily's mother ends up running the farm while her brother allows the debts to mount up again. Emily is taken advantage of and subsequently becomes pregnant with daughter Cathleen.
We follow the lives of Emily and John, both of whom are strong characters. They carry on with their lives and make the best of it, despite the heartbreak that separation brings...
This unputdownable book is brilliant although I think it deserves a sequel.
