Product Description

Another page-turning story of tragedy and triumph from the No.1 bestselling author of The Loner and The Journey.

It is 1902. Emily is sixteen years of age and blissfully in love with John, two years her senior. They are secretly planning a life together, when they are violently driven apart.

Denied the man she loves, and dominated by a brutally possessive uncle, Emily is left devastated when she is cruelly taken advantage of. When a child is born, she cannot reveal the identity of the father to anyone, or there will be a terrible price to pay.

Trapped and ashamed, she seeks solace in her daughter, Cathleen, but there is little consolation. Emily resigns herself to the fact that her true love may never return, and her life begins to take another direction, but John is never far from her mind.

But when history threatens to repeat itself and she is once again in danger, Emily must put all thoughts of John aside and find a way to safeguard her daughter.

Set at the beginning of the twentieth century, two lovers are forced apart by the girl, Emily's uncle who has taken over the farm after her father abandons his family and farm to escape the mounting debts. Emily's uncle is cruel and vindictive, although as the story progresses, he is eventually sidelined while Emily's mother ends up running the farm while her brother allows the debts to mount up again. Emily is taken advantage of and subsequently becomes pregnant with daughter Cathleen.

We follow the lives of Emily and John, both of whom are strong characters. They carry on with their lives and make the best of it, despite the heartbreak that separation brings...

This unputdownable book is brilliant although I think it deserves a sequel.
