Pauls Free as a bird, 31 Oct 2001
This review is from: From a Lover to a Friend (Audio CD)
This is Paul McCartney's very own remake of "Free as a bird". Well, that is not fair. This is a completely different song, with a different melody. But hearing his voice you'll say: "yes". The same bathroom-like echo, a bit out of tune (Paul used a demo for this song, recorded late at night) and, well, warm and tender. It requires a few listens, but this is definetely great. Rumour has it the single will also be released with the new song "Freedom". But check out the remixes here!

McCartney back in emotional form, 31 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: From a Lover to a Friend (Audio CD)
Paul McCartney's first new original material since Flaming Pie shows a marked return to the almost home-demo sparseness of his early post-Beatles career. This is a daring choice for the first single from the Driving Rain album. From A Lover To A Friend is rough around the edges, with McCartney's voice almost faltering in places, but in the context of the lyrics and the underlying tension (he's obviously talking about Linda's loss here), this only strengthens the emotional impact and honesty of the song. Not the best track on Driving Rain, and not a single that will attract widespread radio airplay, but then McCartney now resides in the album-buying sector of the CD market. Devout Macca fans will buy it regardless, while others may just be tempted to delve deeper into McCartney's newly-exposed psyche by prefering to wait for the forthcoming album.

Paul On An Emotional Edge, 7 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: From a Lover to a Friend (Audio CD)
In light of the fact that this is not the most commerical release by Paul in the last few years, this song deserves radioplay for its honest emotion and loving tribute to Linda. Unfortunately, despite the charity status of Paul's new single, I doubt radio stations will jump at the chance to play this out. Perhaps, the alternative "Freedom" is much more "catchy" and likely to be a number one in the singles market--and rightfully so. However, the haunting beauty of "From A Lover To A Friend" is pure emotional edge. Paul is pushing the boundary of his own musical legacy. It works and it doesn't. It's hard to accept a strained voice and demo-like fills in an MTV world. Nonetheless, Paul chooses emotional edge and honesty over chart success--and good for him. Perhaps releasing the second remix of the song as the single would have made a more shocking, but bolder, statement with its subtle and fragile beauty.
