After buying Eithne's previous book,
Yeah, I Made it Myself: DIY Fashion for the Not Very Domestic GoddessI couldn't wait for the next one to come out. I loved the first book, it was chatty and quirky and above all gave me a real desire to start sewing again, despite a terminal lack of time.
Nevertheless I was pleasantly surprised at how many projects there were in the new book. It really is fantastic value. As a very experienced sewer I would advise newcomers to be very careful with the instructions though, and perhaps use simple patterns for things like the dresses and tops. Don't get me wrong, I adore Eithnes creative, enthusiastic books, they are just fantastic. But the directions are shaky to say the least, and inexperienced seamstresses could come seriously unstuck. The general sewing advice is well written but the individual projects are lacking in instruction, accurate sizing and many steps are not explained that well. Like many other sewing books I was occasionally irritated that the photographer's need for the shot to look moody or trendy did not show the item completely.
That said, with a few basic store bought patterns to help you this is a wealth of creative ideas. There are a few guest designers in this one too, and whilst the projects vary they are rather on the adventurous, young, wacky side. Although my tastes are less wild, these are great projects that with a change of colour or decoration can be made into anything you want, they are truly versatile.
It sounds like I have given this a less than glowing review and I don't mean to because I truly love this book. But where Eithne comes into her own is with the chatty friendly text, and the fun ideas. I only mean to warn new sewers that they may not find idiot proof step by step pictures here. Just reading the text alone can be enough to enthuse you about sewing and creating, and there are not many authors who can do that. Thank you Eithne, keep publishing!
