Product Description

Lovely Day is the most comprehensive collection of Bill Withers’ greatest hits, featuring 20 of the soul singer’s best-loved songs, including the famous duet "Just The Two Of Us" with Grover Washington Jr. This definitive collection spans from Withers’ breakout hit "Ain’t No Sunshine" (1971), all the way through to 1984's "In the Name of Love", a duet with Ralph MacDonald.

I am enjoying this. A good well packaged CD with all my favourite songs on. Still enjoying listening to it in the car.

This is an agreeable compilation of Bill Wither's music although I can't quite agree with the comment that this includes "hidden gems." For the most part, the best material is represented by the familiar such as "Lovely Day" (forever associated in my mind with being driven down in the car to Devon on my summer holidays with my parents and my sister in the 1970's)and "Just the two of us." Another stand out is "Use me" with it's wonderfully crabby Fender Rhodes riff. I doubt if Wither's has ever composed anything quite as striking at "Grandma's hands" which is blessed with the best set of lyrics on this CD. Elsewhere, there are nods at soul, "Smooth jazz" and pop and there is the occasional chance for an instrumentalist to stretch out on a solo. As the liner notes attest, Bill Withers obviously has a great love for jazz. Throughout this collection, Bill Wither's wonderfully rich voice dominates. I love the more familiar material on this CD.

Less positively, I would have to say that there are a few tracks on this compilation which are not too memorable and fall into the abyss of the kind of balnd MOR music that was often a feature of the 1970's. Some of the tracks that appear towards the last third of the disc are a bit bland despite the obvious strength and familarity of Wither's voice. There is nothing offensive or anything to dislike about these tunes - it is just that they don't stand out amongst the better material. You would struggle to be able to whistle some of the weaker efforts and the lyrics just seem ordinary an uninspired.

In summary, the most recognisable songs are without doubt the best and for this reason alone I think I would recommend this record.

Not much to say that hasn't been said. Its a good solid overview of Mr Withers career and contains the songs you expect to be here. At least it does if you're a casual fan of Bill Withers. If you're a long standing fan you probably don't need this and can easily pick holes in it.

As a casual fan of the man myself and someone who just wants the choice cuts right now this ticks all the boxes for me. And he is perfect summertime listening after all.

There are a lot of Bill Withers Greatest Hits/Best Of style compilations available, this one appeared the best on balance perusing the track lists of the various options. Interested was piqued by a BBC4 documentary, reminding me of the many hits Bill had and some quite lovely tracks besides. The title track is perhaps his best known work but with "Just The Two Of Us" "Ain't No Sunshine", "Lean On Me" and "Use Me" also present in the first few tracks the fear was a drop off in quality as the album progressed. Not a bit of it, the lesser known tracks hold their own. This is a lovely collection, perhaps the remix of the title track is superfluous but if you know the tracks above you can buy with confidence that you will enjoy the whole just as much. A sadly under rated talent.

We've all heard Bill Withers classic songs, Ain't no sunshine, Lean on me, Lovely day etc. This album contains a few more hidden gems, I would recommend it to anyone.
