Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bill Withers has written two bona fide classics ("Ain't No Sunshine" and "Lean on Me"), recorded a slew of memorable hits, and had songs covered by everyone from Joe Cocker to Isaac Hayes to Kiss. Still, he's under-appreciated. His voice is smooth, his singing is subtle, and his songs move along over sinuous, sexy grooves. It's all so effortless that it's easy to overlook how substantial Withers' work really is. Never flashy, his best songs burn with a heat that lingers long after the last note has been played. This collection brings together a few songs from his remarkable early-1970s albums, including such hits and near hits as "Grandma's Hands," "Who Is He? (And What Is He to You?)" and the seriously funky "Use Me," as well as some gems from the later 70s (including "Lovely Day"). --Percy Keegan

When my friend got this CD I had never heard of Bill Withers and I can now assure the world that he is a great artist and appears to be much underestimated. I have played this CD to most of the people I know and all of them knew some of the songs but none of them had ever heard the originals. On a sunny afternoon with the smooth and laid back Bill Withers on the stereo I am at my happiest and most relaxed. This is a cornerstone of my CD collection and since my friend bought it I along with many others have followed suit. I strongly recomend that you do the same.

Nectar for the ears 22 Dec 2003
Format:Audio CD
You can listen to this album anywhere you like. In the car, at home with a loved one, over dinner with friends or in a cafe/restaurant and the feeling is always the same. Washed over with good feelings and ambience second to none. The songs never date and you find yourself either singing along to them or tapping the wheel or nodding your head. You even think, "Didn't know he recorded this one!!" during one or two of them.
A great album featuring an underestimated and under exposed artiste.

An iconic figure in Black Music. His melodies are a fusion of melancholic old-school blues and rifts of simple genius that form the foundations of contemporary hip hop. These are all rolled over in a wise, unhurried style by a rich voice evoking images of smoke filled Harlem Jazz clubs and the oozing mississippi. A treat for the ears and a must for anybody with an ear for music. Do not underestimate the musical influence of the works of Bill Withers.

Bill Withers, the best!
What a truly excellent album. All the best tunes here. Wish he'd written more, a genius, yet very modest guy.

Bill at his best
A disc to complement my original vinyl copy which is now unfortunately showing the inevitable signs of age. A good copy nonetheless.

A true album of hits... a forgotten gem.
This is simply an album everyone should own. It is not possible to convey the emotional depth; the often insightful lyrics and Bill Withers himself. Read more
