I have always been a great fan of the Lovejoy series. This DVD collection provided me with an opportunity to see series one which, I believe, is not often repeated on the tv.
This is a great collection of episodes. I especially enjoyed "The Judas Pair" which was one of the darker episodes where the lives of the characters were in danger. The vast majority of Lovejoy episodes are much more light hearted.
There is a greater sense of continuity with this series as most of the core characters remain in every episode. The character of Charlie Gimbert for example features regularly in this series. In later series he only popped up occsaionally.
All in all this is a fine release. The interview with Ian McShane give a nice insight into the origins of the series but apart from that, there is nothing new on offer here. However this doesn't matter a jot as the episodes are well worth the money without any extras. Buy a copy today.

This is a must have for any fan of the very succesful TV series, featuring Ian McShane as the loveable "rogue" and Antique "Divvy". Rural East Anglia is brought to life in this first season which dates back to 1985 and was not immediately a runaway success (as Ian McShane discusses in an Interview extra in 3 parts on the DVD set). The early production looks a little less polished than the following two series, which came over 5 years later than this, but they are nonetheless extremely enjoyable. Crossing the line between comedy and drama beautifully, Lovejoy and his entourage of regular characters stumble through each adventure ridden episode with a grace and charm seldom seen in more contemporary dramas. If you're new to Lovejoy, this is a great place to start, and for almost 10 hours of entertainment on 3 DVD's, the value is excellent. Funny, witty and absorbing viewing, with great reproduction of sound and vision quality. No real extra's on the DVD's (except the aforementioned interview) but that won't bother most viewers. Can't recommend this set highly enough. Enjoy.

Lovejoy has been off A&E in the States for about 4 years, and I missed the show greatly. I was pleased that it is being released on DVD, and Region 0 makes it easy to play on computer DVD drives that are set for America.
I am looking foward to getting the other 5 seasons.
Be aware the DVD's are PAL format and in North America will only play on computers, and some home theater DVD players that have PAL-NTSC converters built-in like Pioneer's DV-563A.

I know there are plenty of reviews here - even if most of them don't actually tell us anything - but I have to add my bit. I became a Lovejoy fan after watching a 'taped-off-the-TV' episode that I purloined from my dad's video collection on a wet Sunday afternoon at the tender age of 14. I was immediately drawn to the gentle whimsy and knockabout fun of this roguish antiques dealer and his motley crew. For anyone new to the series Lovejoy ("No Mister, just Lovejoy") himself is a 'divvy' - someone who intuitively knows the value (or lack of it) of any given antique. Trying to earn a crust he is hounded by his sneering landlord, auction house owner Charlie Gimbert; supported by his drunken barker 'Tinker' and pestered by young college dropout cum wannabe antiques expert, Eric.
This DVD introduces the character and documents his various run-ins with the law, conmen, beautiful women and unscrupulous antiques rivals. Notable moments include The Axeman Cometh's hilarious ex-con - after Lovejoy's head (literally), Charlie Gimbert's nubile sister Amanda (Lovejoy winds his rival up by constantly insinuating that he deflowered her) and Lovejoy's burgeoning romance with Lady Jane Felsham.
This series belongs to a golden-age of TV comedy drama that will probably never be matched - buy it and escape reality for a few hours...

This is an amazing DVD loaded with all the first season of Lovejoy. 1) The Firefly Cage 2) The Axeman Cometh 2) The Sting
4) Friends, Romans and Enemies 5) The Judas Pair 6) To Sleep No More 7) The Real Thing 8) The March of Time 9)Death and Venice - Parts 1 & 2. Included is an interview with McShane (part 1) where he talks about Lovejoy. Gash's grungy divey was tamed by McShane and made him a wee bit more acceptable to telly viewers, but he retained the essence and often used many of Gash's story lines.
The whole cast is great, the series is created with loving care and BBC gives a great package at a super price. Not to be missed by McShane fans or fans of the series.
500 minutes of pure delight!

Lovejoy is a classic with all the right ingredients of Comedy and Drama. Ian Mcshane comes across as the lovable rouge who always manages to outwit Charles Gimbert. The cast itself is a masterstroke with the likes of Dudley Sutton as Tinker Dill. With Lovejoy's Love interest played by Phyills Logan as posh Lady Jane. This series filmed in 1985 in and around suffolk now does looks a bit dated. But the brilliant writing and performances carries this through. As for the Dvd i would have like to have seen more extras and some re-mastering.As the picture quality is grainy in places and the sound isn't to great. But well done Delta Music on this long awaited release, i hope the other five series are issued along with the specials.
