5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Delight 6 Dec 2006
By J Grainger VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is an absolute gem. There is a delight on every page. Even those not of a religious bent will find something to please in this book. From Churchillian speeches, well-loved poems by Rupert Brook, Laurence Binyon (They shall not grow old.. - how many people have read the full version of that poem?) and others.

It is one of my favourite books (if not THE favourite)on my bookshelves. It even fits comfortably into the hand. I can't praise it too highly.

One slight criticism is that the Introduction says that 'for ease of reference there are also indexes at the end of the book to enable you to find a particular item by reference to its author, its overall theme or its Bible reference'. There aren't. But don't worry, all the indexes are included at the front of the book making it very easy to find any item.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful and a pleasure to use 5 Nov 2010
Format:Hardcover
My son gave me a copy of this book some time ago, and I have used it constantly since then. The book is a wonderful collection of thought-provoking hymns, poems and readings, with something for every mood, every need, and every circumstance. Its most obvious use is as a source-book for special occasions like weddings and funerals, and it is of course a great source of readings for all occasions. But I have found it most useful as a browser, a treasure-trove to dip in to for comfort, inspiration and entertainment. I would recommend this book to anyone with a service or ceremony to plan, but even more to anyone in need of a comforting, uplifting poem or reading during the difficult days every one occasionally has to face.
