Book Description

What happens to love? Where does love hide? In this modern reworking of themes from Jane Eyre, Patricia Finney gives us the story of Anna Clements, overburdened and disappointed wife, mother and community nurse, who no longer believes in her own beauty and her own chance of happiness. Anna spends her days caring for the dying in southern Cornwall, UK, and then in the evenings she returns to a husband who has forgotten how to love her. Anna gives so much of herself, in her work and at home, but in return, she is taken for granted.
And then one day, a man rides into Anna’s life who is so obviously wrong for her, so obviously dangerous, that she is reluctant even to accept his help with the patient who knows him. He’s gentle and he’s caring, but as Anna begins to trust him, she also realises that he has a secret.
Patricia Finney is the author of Do We Not Bleed? and (as P F Chisholm) the Robert Carey novels, all available from the Kindle Bookstore.

4.0 out of 5 stars MILLS & BOON ? NO WAY!! 7 Oct. 2014

This is a gripping, page turning, raunchy love story. It was a delight to have a heroine who is over weight and over forty, a 'care in the community' nurse with a dangerous hobby. However, I felt that PF was writing the book she "had" to write - that she had something to get out of her system, that she was dispelling / exorcizing some private demons. It would be ill-mannered to draw conclusions between the heroine's adventures and some snippets of the author's biography that are available in the public domain, but it may be significant that the heroine's depressive husband is a successful writer of historical detective stories. This is as much a wish-fulfilment novel as anything produced by Mills & Boon, but far, far more viscerally satisfying. I loved the minor characters, too, and she had some punchy things to say about show-biz celebrities. It had humour, courage and respect for the human spirit and while the ending was in many ways conventionally satisfying if unrealistic, it did also provide the heroine with the prospect of an interesting new career. So why only 4 stars? Because I CANNOT forgive her for what happened to the rabbit!!!! .

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down! 10 Jan. 2015

People said many years ago that the late Peter Ustinov would read the telephone directory on stage and by doing so entertain his public. Patricia Finney does the same with anything she writes; she has an enormous gift for entertainment. Although the subject of Love Without Shadows is deadly serious: terminal care nurse Anna, the dying "Onion", enigmatic Tattoo, crackhead Benjy and more, there's always evidence of dry humour.
Anna's life is grim. Her sons are teenage slobs and her self-absorbed husband doesn't do a thing....or so she thinks.
Another great book, quite different from all the others by Patricia Finney except for being impossible to put down until it's finished!
