About the Author

James Ramsden is a London-based Yorkshireman from Ripon. He runs the popular Secret Larder supper club and has written about food and cookery for The Times, The Guardian, Sainsbury's Magazine, the FT and Waitrose Kitchen among others. He has built a reputation for creating exciting, trendy, tasty food without the gaga gourmet at his supper club, and yet he is also known for his relaxed and sociable presence amongst the guests. He is the author of Small Adventures in Cooking and Do-Ahead Dinners.

This book achieves exactly what it sets out to do - revitalise the lunch experience and provide a whole host of great ideas and recipes to avoid that guilty, expensive and unrewarding sandwich from a chain café.

The noodle section is especially well laid out and offers a great range of recipes to add to the list. Given me lots of enjoyment and already saving me lots of wonga, and making me think more keenly about what I'm cooking/eating in general.

So many good ideas to try and tempting enough to make it worthwhile The recipes are trendy and varied, with practical advice (e.g. how to revive a poached egg with hot water and turning leftovers into dips and sauces for meals during the week). Half the problem with pack lunches is finding enough inspiration to motivate you to bother making one, but this certainly ticks that box. Clever book. Much healthier and cheaper than a bought sandwich too + saves time queuing for the till! Nice illustrations too.

Some of these recipes takes too make for lunch next day. You really need to have an afternoon free to make some of these recipes. The author suggested leaving your Sunday afternoon to make these lunches. This is not a definitely a pack your lunch every day book, as each recipe only serves 2 portions. So if you make 2 servings for yourself on Sunday, your lunch will run out after Tuesday, and then you have to go through the book to find recipes that you can make within 15-30mins during week nights.

The recipes doesn't tell you if it can be packed the night before or it needs to assembled in the morning. Personally I prefer to have one container to take to work. Some of the recipes includes up to about 3 containers(containing liquid as well!). Not a problem if you drive, but if you use public transportation to commute to work, then you'll need an extra proper lunch bag.

I think the title of this review sums up my feelings for this excellent cook book by the food writer James Ramsden. It's simply laid out and full of delicious recipes, it isn't too much of an understatement to say I make everyone jealous when I pull out my packed lunchbox and put it smugly on the table.
