4.0 out of 5 stars A more commercial approach 13 Dec 2010
Format:Audio CD
This new E.P from the Pierces seems to mark a more conventional and commercial approach to their work. This might be disappointing if it wasn't for the fact that the music is still terrific and that exciting dark thread is still present.
The Pierces are probably best known for their quirky nursery-rhyme style track "Secrets" and this E.P is a far cry from that, especially in the title track, which is more reminiscent of some of Stevie Nicks best solo work. But that hint of darkness is still there and the Pierce sisters voices are as sublime as ever. Why the Pierces are not huge stars is beyond me - but this recording should go some way to addressing that.

If there's an iPod plugged into the sound system at the Gates of Heaven, it is most likely playing The Pierces catalog on constant rotation. Their lush, deep harmonies are as exquisite as ever on this new EP - but this isn't lightweight Lilith Fair fare. The Pierces are sexy, sensuous, dangerous and playful; their albums are exquisite storm clouds parted by blasts of blinding sunshine; their music vibrantly swirls indie rock, new wave, tango, folk, power pop and country.

The Love You More EP is hopefully a preview of album #4. The title track opens with a sinister electric guitar line before kicking into a rhythm that evokes a hell-bent road trip. We Are Stars is dreamier affair - a brisk beat and a haunting guitar line dance with the sisters' angelic voices. To The Grave - oddly enough - is the brightest, most joyous track on the album by adding mandolin and ukulele into the mix. We Can Make It recalls the retro girl group dreaminess from the movie-set scene in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive.

While Allison and Catherine Pierce are the show, the secret weapons of this EP are Rik Simpson and Guy Berryman who are credited as producers under the name The Darktones. Each vocal part and instrument is crisply recorded and mixed - it is such a sonic treat.

Fans who discovered the band through their theme song to Pretty Little Liars, the promos on Dexter, or their delicious breakthrough single "Boring" will be thrilled with this latest treasure. And if you have yet to discover The Pierces' brilliant album "Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge" - I urge you to download it ASAP.

Total running time is just a hair over 12 minutes - a tasty snack to hold us over until dinner is served - hopefully not too long into 2011.

Note: This review also appears on my Amazon.US page. I bought the CD through the UK site - well worth the import price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guy from Coldplay lifts angelic sisters even higher 17 Nov 2010

If there's an iPod plugged into the sound system at the Gates of Heaven, it is most likely playing The Pierces catalog on constant rotation. Their lush, deep harmonies are as exquisite as ever on this new EP - but this isn't lightweight Lilith Fair fare. The Pierces sing beautiful music laced with edgy guitar lines, sweeping bridges and surprising lyrical turns around every corner.

The Love You More EP is a preview of album #4: You & I (out in March in the UK and in the States this summer). The first two tracks will appear on the album, the latter two are absolutely essential B-sides.

The title track is a cinematic rocker about love pushed to the absolute limit. We Are Stars is dreamier affair - a brisk beat and jangly guitars tango with the sisters' angelic voices. EP highlight To The Grave is the brightest, most joyous track on the album with sparkling mandolin (and is that a xylophone?) swept into the mix. The vocals on We Can Make It have just the slightest sparkling echo that closes the set on a high note.

While Allison and Catherine Pierce are the show, the secret weapons of this EP are Rik Simpson and Coldplay's Guy Berryman who are credited as producers under the name The Darktones. Each vocal part and instrument is crisply recorded and mixed - it is such a sonic treat.

Fans who discovered The Pierces through their theme song to Pretty Little Liars, the promos on Dexter, or their delicious breakthrough single "Boring" will be thrilled with this latest treasure. And if you have yet to discover The Pierces' brilliant earlier works "Light of the Moon" (see my other reviews) and "Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge" - I urge you to download them ASAP to tide you over until the album drops.
