Remember The Girl Next Door, from a few years ago? Well, this is basically the same film. You have the high school nerd/outcast and his slightly eccentric best friend, the attractive girl who is way out of his league, her jerk boyfriend, and an assortment of other hangers on. The only real difference here is that instead of a supposed porn star, we have high school cheerleaders. Sadly though, whilst Girl Next Door had at least a tiny bit of charm, helped in part by capable leads Emile Hirsch and Elisha Cuthbert, Beth Cooper has very little personality, is light on laughs, and features the whiny girl from Heroes.
So, in essence, nerd falls in love with stunner, gets bullied by the football team, has a few adventures with the eccentric best friend, gets to know the unobtainable girl and by the end of the picture, is a more worldly and better man for all his experiences. You've seen it before - many times, no doubt, and probably had a better time than you'll have by watching this.
Its not a bad film as such, its just distinctly average and very little stands out. The film belongs to Panettiere and to a lesser extent, male co star Paul Rust. In fact, the total screen time when either of them arent on screen is probably no more than two or three minutes out of the 100 minutes run time. Panettiere, for all her faults, lights up the screen and does well enough to make you believe that every guy in high school might fall in love with her, but sadly for all nerds out there, the truth is that she'd never look sideways at a guy like Paul Rust in the real world, so the entire film is based on a lie, and its not entertaining enough to have you look past that.
I watched it on a rainy Sunday afternoon with absolutely nothing on TV, and while it passed the time harmlessly enough, its not one I'd consider rewatching at some point in the future or recommending to others. There are many more films out there which follow the same basic plot and are either some or all of funny, charming and interesting. This just doesnt quite cut it.
