5.0 out of 5 stars Typical 70's Pharoah 21 May 2009
Format:Audio CD
I have plenty of Pharoah's albums and cd's and yet, I have to confess, was unaware of this one until 6 months ago.
In true Pharoah style you only get two tracks for your money, but those two tracks are good for over 40 minutes of music.
Love is Everywhere begins with 6 minutes of classic Pharoah introduction. With the man himself vocally improvising and playing over one of his infamous (if one of the more subtle) 'walls of sound'. Any strangers to the man's music may find this a little overwhelming and somewhat unstructured (even though he has produced much more overwhelming and unstructured music in his career (See 'To John')). I have always believed that he used this style to test the patience and resilience of the listener (especially in the days of vinyl and tapes when moving forward through a track was much more difficult).
As with many of his tracks, the real melody and message comes in the second half. Love is Everywhere settles down to become a truly mezmerising, haunting and cerebral piece of music. It gives the players the chance to show that they really are masters of their craft with Pharoah just wandering in and out of the piece in his own incredible way. It's easy to believe that they just get in the studio and let things take their course and, in a way, I would love to think that is exactly how these tracks come about. Just plan the basic melody and rythm and just all get stuck in as we please. Absoulutely worth the (rather hefty) asking price in it's own right....

'To John' starts in a melodic and subtle style but, ultimately, really is not for the feint hearted. This is real heavy conceptual jazz that some say Pharoah inherited (or even stole) from Coltrane. I like to believe that, if JC had lived on, they would have made plenty of music like this together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pharoah! 16 Jan 2011
By Ad Arma
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Pharoah is on his best when he gets the chance to squeeck and chatter, blow and breath, jump and drift around..
If you are a jazz-lover or searcher of the roots-in-motion and enjoy the post-Coltrane period, where it was all invented and the ache and search of the original findings didn't mix away yet, where there was something to be said and done, then you will get caught and infected by this one..
Was long out of print and a hard-to-find isue.. Thanks to the Japanese fine-tasters
of Jazz, its back in roulation.. So buy it and enjoy it for many times to come!
That title.. It could have been way too soft and misleading the reader in the idea that this is a CD with lovesongs..No! Well, there is a lot of love in Pharoah's touch, but what he aimes for goes deeper than surface and even deeper than the bottom..
Nice sounding of this historical top-recording, by the way!!
And Paharoah's saxsounds didn't bleach a bit after all that time.
The man is a legend and here is why! Take the time, close your eyes..it will come fine!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Pharoah meditation and screechfest 4 April 2007
By Paul Robertz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Don't let my four-star rating scare you off. I reserve five stars for only the music I can't live without (like Pharoah's "Karma" and "Black Unity"). I bought the original Impulse LP 30 years ago and am listening it now. It's a shame this isn't widely available, and a shame that the musicians weren't credited. This was one of the last recordings he made for Impulse before wandering off in search of new directions, and one of his best ever.

The first side, "Love Is Everywhere" is mostly relaxing and meditative, with Pharoah noodling inventively on soprano sax over his patented third-world groove. However, it's the second side, "To John", which keeps me coming back. Pharoah's overblown tenor and a high-octane trumpet (Hannibal Marvin Peterson?) repeatedly climax into the energetic outbursts that made Pharoah notorious in the late '60s/early '70s. Joe Bonner has a great Tyner-influenced solo here, too. The percussionists Badal Roy and James Mtume provide the requisite colors that keep this at least as interesting as the sessions they recorded with Miles Davis at about the same time. The album ends in modal peacefulness

Reviewing this is almost as useless as talking about why sex with your partner was so good.
