Product Description

Product Description

Ruth Burrows is the author of numerous best-selling books, including Essence of Prayer. This new book is the result of a commission to write the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book for 2012. In it she distills the wisdom and experience gained from her life as a Carmelite nun into a vigorous, compelling presentation of what it means to be a Christian.

Ruth Burrows believes that many people, even regular churchgoers, miss the true meaning and joy of Christianity. God longs for us to know him as our Saviour, so that he can bring us to share in his own Trinitarian life and love. Burrows traces how God reveals himself to us through our personal lives, particularly our experiences of weakness and failure; through history and the natural world; through the scriptures; and above all, through his beloved Son Jesus. Encountering the living God revealed in Jesus Christ challenges us to face our own truth, and sets us free to receive the boundless love, the joy, fulfilment, and holiness, for which we were made.

About the Author

Ruth Burrows is a Carmelite Nun from Quidenham in Norfolk. She is the author of a number of bestselling books including Guidelines for Mystical Prayer and Essence of Prayer.

Format:Paperback
This book is a must for all who wish to pray realistically. The writer knows the ups and downs of prayer but has pereseverred despite and inspite of of eveything. Ruth Burrows makes clear that effective prayer begins and ends with Jesus and the focus must always be on Him. The book is written in away that you can read it in short sections for reflection and meditation. This is must for Lent.

Hard Going 2 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Am finding this book hard going and requires repeated readings for it to make some sense. I think it is a book for reading in short periods like a meditation rather than at one sitting. Tends to give me theological indigestion if I read too much of it at once there is so much religion in it that its not for the faint hearted,though the levels of spirituality that the author professes not to have is not true and it is a deeply spiritual book.

Give this up for Lent
The best part of this book is the introduction by Archbishop Rowan Williams. A very un-inspiring and repetitive book for the Lenten journey -- give this book up for Lent.

If only we really knew Jesus we would not be so concerned with putting on a good show and of how others see us. Instead of concealing our insecurities, fears, secret failings even from our selves, we would accept the reality that we are, tranquil in the certainty that our Lord looks on us with infinite compassion and love. "e;
