Format:Audio CD
"LOVE" by The Loves is a gem of an album, and is likely to sweep into my top 10 list come December. The Loves come from Wales, and remind me of virtually every band I have ever loved yet manage to avoid sounding quite like any of them. Quite how they manage to assemble their kaleidoscopic vision of the last 40 years of pop music without ever having to resort to pastiche is beyond me, but it works a charm, and I've played the album twice a day since getting it a few weeks ago. There are hints of early Primal Scream (when they still wrote pop songs), The Rolling Stones, Dylan in '66, The Byrds, The Beach Boys, as well as The Shangri-Las and The Stooges. Most of all, however, they remind me of New Zealand's own Brunettes ... both bands have managed to successfully fuse 60s pop and 80s new-wave to create something which sounds fresh, imaginative and is bursting with tunes.
The album closes with the 7 minute " ... Love", and by the end you find yourself unwittingly intoning its closing mantra:
Love is something you want
Love is something you bleed
Love is something you would give your life for
Love is something you need
"LOVE" is certainly something you need.
