It's one of life's mysteries why Lynn Miles is so overlooked an artist (perhaps not comfortably fitting into any conventional category has a lot to do with it), but this is a first-class album by an artist in her prime, and it really deserves your attention. Much more "Shawn Colvin" than "Leonard Cohen", it's a lyrical multifaceted commentary on love and life that leaves me feeling wonderfully uplifted each time I hear it. Personal favourites are "Flames of love", a gentle rocker to kick-off proceedings, "Night drive", which is nominally about an overnight journey but really about the journey through life, and "This is the night", which is a bouncy, truly life-affirming song, but there actually isn't a dud track on the CD. If you haven't heard it yet, do give it a try - there's a very good chance it'll be one of the best musical discoveries you'll make in a very long time...
