Product Description

CD Description

This is Lynn Miles' follow-up to her 2003 Juno Award-winning UNRAVEL (CSCCD1022). It is at once intensely introspective and universal, with Miles combining her sweet, melodic and powerful voice with incisive lyrics. Fans will instantly recognize her familiar almost comforting, darkness but may be surprised by the record’s overall upbeat musical tone. Lynn teamed up with UNRAVEL producer and guitarist Ian Lefeuvre and drummer Peter Von Althen, both of Starling, as well as double-bassist John Geggie to create a record of complex, visceral material. Rounding out the sounds are Prairie Oyster guitarist Keith Glass and violinist James Stephens. LOVE SWEET LOVE is a road album. Songs such as "Night Drive", which Miles describes as being about “driving around in my Volkswagen for 12 years, and wanting to go home or wanting someone to be in the seat beside me to tell me that everything’s going to be OK”, and “8 Hour Drive”, perfectly capture the lonely miles on a two-lane black-top. Others like “Sweet And Tender Heart”, about accepting your heart wherever it takes you, and “Never Coming Back”, about coming to terms with mistakes made in a relationship, are very much road songs on the map of the human heart. Tracks: Flames Of Love / Love Sweet Love / 1000 Lovers / Trying Not To Be So Sad / Never Coming Back / Night Drive / Rainmaker / 8 Hour Drive / This Is The Night / Sweet And Tender Heart / Casinos El Camino.

Smile, Lynn, Smile 17 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
The poetess of sadness and North Country chill is back with an album of new songs-her first in four years since the magnificent UNRAVEL. Although not quite up to that high standard (nor that of her equally wonderful second cd, SLIGHTLY HAUNTED), there's lots to love on this new release. In fact, the title cut and a number of others are about the edges of love, the wishes for it, and the walls which keep it out or keep it in. Lynn's way with a melody is as engaging as ever, her almost talking and then singing approach as direct and personal as it ever was, her wistfulness and wishfulness and sadness as palpable as always.

A THOUSAND LOVERS COULD PUT THEIR ARMS AROUND ME
A THOUSAND WISHES COULD FALL LIKE SUMMER RAIN
A THOUSAND MOTHERS COULD SING
"HUSH NOW, DON'T YOU CRY"
THERE IS NOTHING IN THIS WORLD TONIGHT THAT IS GOING TO
TAKE AWAY MY PAIN.

But joy breaks through sometimes or will soon-particularly in "This is the Night" and "Sweet and Tender Heart." You wish that for Lynn. You want the down-turned sides of her sensitive mouth to lift. This beautiful Canadian has done it again. Lovely.

It's one of life's mysteries why Lynn Miles is so overlooked an artist (perhaps not comfortably fitting into any conventional category has a lot to do with it), but this is a first-class album by an artist in her prime, and it really deserves your attention. Much more "Shawn Colvin" than "Leonard Cohen", it's a lyrical multifaceted commentary on love and life that leaves me feeling wonderfully uplifted each time I hear it. Personal favourites are "Flames of love", a gentle rocker to kick-off proceedings, "Night drive", which is nominally about an overnight journey but really about the journey through life, and "This is the night", which is a bouncy, truly life-affirming song, but there actually isn't a dud track on the CD. If you haven't heard it yet, do give it a try - there's a very good chance it'll be one of the best musical discoveries you'll make in a very long time...
