Product Description

Doug Hawkins, disgraced and jobless LAPD homicide detective, moves to Callister, Idaho, to find a peaceful existence and renew acquaintance with a best friend from childhood, Ted Benson. Almost immediately, he finds himself involved in a rendezvous at a remote mountain cabin with the barmaid from one of the town's two taverns. The last thing he expects is to be confronted by a good-looking blonde who attacks his truck with a tire iron and threatens him with arrest for trespassing. His relationship with the hot-blooded Alex McGregor goes downhill from there.

The wealthy and reclusive Alex lives with her two cats in a hundred-year-old mansion on the side of Wolf Mountain. She’s busy traveling between Callister and L.A., where she owns and maintains two businesses. She doesn’t want a man interfering with her life.

A midnight fire burns the mountain cabin, which was located on Alex's land, to the ground, killing her alcoholic ex-husband. Doug’s honed instincts lead him to suspect the worst, but he keeps quiet. He’s new in town.

The crisis escalates when a partying friend of Alex’s ex-husband decides to log trees from land she and her ex sold to him years back. To prevent pollution of a much-loved pond and stream on her property, the strong-willed Alex is determined to stop him. Bitterness and threats ensue.

Alex appears to be a magnet for trouble, yet Doug is drawn to her. He can’t get along with her, but he can’t leave her alone.

Meanwhile, Alex’s lawyer, with whom Doug is acquainted, is worried about her safety. He hires Doug to investigate the cabin fire and the suspicious death of her ex-husband. Doug reluctantly agrees and uncovers even more havoc than he first suspected. Saving her pond and stream and winning her affection forever becomes a tall order.

Praise for "The Love of a Stranger"

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Book 27 Aug 2004
By Mary Craig - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I became a Jeffrey fan when I read Love of a Cowboy. This one just may be better. Alex is a beautiful, wounded soul who cannot withstand Doug, another wonderful but wounded human being. Irrestible love and dogged determination break down the emotional walls and bring them together so they can stop fighting each other long enough to battle against a true villain. It's a real page turner, one of those that keeps you saying "Just a few more pages, and then I'll stop." But you won't stop, because the book is too good to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Characters to love and hate and love. A great book! 17 July 2004

Format:Mass Market Paperback
In the small town of Callister Idaho, Alex McGregor, a hard headed lonely woman is known by the locals as the witch on the mountain. Doug Hawkins, an outsider trying to escape problems of his past finds love in the most unexpected place. His feelings un-returned by the scared battered soul hiding in the shell of Alex McGregor poses a challenge to be won. During the many twists and turns of this story I really fell in love with these characters both with their quirky dispositions and their true to life personalities. This story has you wrapped up until the end in mystery and intrigue for both the characters and its complex plot. I hope to read more like this in the future.

2.0 out of 5 stars Love of a Stranger 26 Dec 2005
By AK - Published on
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Alex McGregor and Doug Hawkins meet under less than perfect conditions; her first sight of him is seeing him with the woman her husband cheated with, ending their marriage. Yet, it is a beginning, and the two get closer after a mysterious fire kills Alex's ex husband and the cabin he was in at the time. Life continues to get her Doug and Alex's way, making romance something both want, but a secondary consideration. However, good things come to those who wait.

Sometimes, it feels like the main plot gets lost in the details of this meandering novel. Both Doug and Alex are scarred souls contending with things that re-open old wounds constantly. However, the story has a realism that many will find appealing.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to walk away from 29 Dec 2006

This was the third book I'd read by Jeffrey. The first two, I gave 5 stars. I couldn't put them down once I started reading. This one wasn't like those. I was glad when it was over. Alex is too mean and self centered and took too long to come around. Her battle with Doug went on and on and on. Finally, she gave in. I'm glad this one is over. I do look forward to reading other books by Jeffrey in the near future. Happy reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost there 4 April 2012

The plot is engaging enough, the dialogues are beliavable and the characters go through their share of development. Alex was a bit exasperating at times but that was part of her growth. Ted was very pathetic, byt the way, even as a secondary character. It's actually 2 1/2 stars from me on account of all the spelling mistakes- it doesn't feel like the novel was proofread, let alone reviewed by a professional editor (it doesn't start so bad but it gets worse towards the end of the story). Be advised that it has a few steamy scenes, but they're not completely gratuitous. The story about the land rights and the forest was interesting.
