Vivian Green ~ Love Story

Amazon.co.uk

When Philly soul sister and former Jill Scott backing singer Vivian Green nails a jazzy supper club vibe--as she does on songs like "What Is Love?" and the impossibly sad "No Sittin' by the Phone" from her lovely Love Story debut--you feel more elegant just listening to her. Green has one up on her hero, Barbara Streisand--she writes her own songs, credibly draws on the rich tapestry of gospel and R&B and she can play.

"24 Hour Blue" is equal parts funk and soul, "Superwoman" is a fluid, string-boosted call-to-arms for unappreciated women everywhere and "Music" is an impossibly hip midnight-hour declaration of love for her craft. Manicured but never bloodless, slick but not austere, A Love Story stands as one of the most confident, accomplished and sexy urban debuts in memory. --Kim Hughes

This is my favourite neo-soul (if you have to put a label on it)Album of the year so far. It's got all the ingredients - philadelphia-based singer-songwriter with soul and sophistication. No mentions of rims 'n' timbs 'n' bling bling - references which are getting really tiresome now. This is gorgeous jazzy, laid back soul music and from someone so young (Vivian in 23) we can expect more from her in the future.
I've heard her described as the "new Alicia Keys" but Vivian's music is not as commercial i.e. not as glossy production-wise, as Alicia Keys so comparisons to her music aren't really *that* helpful. A better comparison would be Jill Scott (Vivian was a member of Jill's band - Fat Back Taffy), India.Arie (for the stripped-down, folkiness) and Floetry (again for the Philadelphia-Jazz-Soul vibe).

Another chance hearing on MTV Base. After hearing a 30 second snipet of Emotional Rollercoaster I went and bought this album, and love it!
I can listen to this album top to bottom and not want to skip over any tracks. There are tracks such as Fanatic and Affected which you just can't help singing to and tracks like Emotional Roller and Sittin' By The Phone which you just sit and listen to, but love anyway.
Definitely worth a listen!

I heard this lady on Jules Holland, I immediately brought the album and must say it's exceptional.
I like soul, RnB and some jazz. This is it all in one. Emotional Rollacoaster is brilliant - now one of my all time favourite songs. Her voice is truely devine!
A would strongly recommend this to anyone.

Absolutely beautiful album. Early Anita Baker crossed with Alicia Keys making a wonderful musical marriage. As in a mariage, you have the jazz versus the soul and then the joining of the two together. A brilliant combination. My husband, who is no lover of jazz or soul, thoroughly enjoyed her music. Even my eight month old baby daughter calms down and relaxes when I put Vivian on. When is she bringing out her next album??

I have been waiting for this cd to be relesed ever since i heard the tune'fanatic' which is a wicked track suitable for club and radio play; however whether it gets the recognition it so deserves will remain to be seen.
My personal favourite has to be 'sittin by the phone', a beautiful song with a fantastic jazz feel, sounding not far from the likes of Sarah Vaughn.
Other tunes to look out for include what is love?,24 hour blue, and keep on going.
This cd is a breath of fresh air both musically and lyricly, and in a world where it is hard to find a cd with no swearing on it just makes it even more of a positive.
Vivian Greene is definately someone to look forward to in the future and with expierence singing with the likes of Jill Scott and Maxwell she can only get better!
It just gets better with each play!
