More About the Author

Jan Constantine was born in Lancashire, once the British home of textiles. Her mother was a tailoress and her grandmother a seamstress/milliner and they taught her to sew from a very young age. She spent her early career as a successful fashion designer in London before moving to the Cheshire countryside to build a career in interior design and raise two daughters with her husband David.

Jan Constantines's homes have been featured in many prestigious magazines and she has appeared on several television makeover programmes. She is currently one of the experts on ITV television's Auction Party with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Jan has also worked as a stylist on various advertising campaigns and on magazines such as Italian Vogue and W.

In 2002 Jan launched her eponymous hand-embroidery business, creating an exquisite range of original designs for textiles and home accessories, hand-worked on high-quality natural cottons, linens, wools and silks. In just a few years it has grown from a cottage industry, with friends sewing round her kitchen table, to an established brand selling through its own website (www.janconstantine.com) as well as supplying Harrods, Liberty of London, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and John Lewis in the UK, Bergdorf Goodman in New York, and several independent shops around the world.
Jan is now licensing her brand to include many different product lines and she has been appointed the official licensee for hand-embroidered home textiles by LOCOG for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Jan Constantine's first book, Heirloom Embroidery, was published by Jacqui Small in 2008 and she has just finished writing her second book Love Stitching, due to be published in May 2011 in the USA and July 2011 in the UK.

This book is very inspiring! however it doesn't mention where to purchase the lovely wool felt for these projects. I emailed her site to ask what percentage of wool they use in their products and was informed it was 60% which I can't find anywhere! They said 36% would do!

I could only find 35% it was O.K. but the finished result does not look as good.

Some lovely projects to get your teeth into, I would recommend this book but would like to see the 60% felt sold on her site!

Format: Hardcover
This book consists of embroidery and appliqué projects from designer Jan Constantine. The projects are mainly for the home, cushions, throws, rugs etc as well as a few bags. Difficulty wise they range from simple to more complex so there should be something for everyone.

I love that her designs are so colourful and striking; the items you make would really become feature pieces in your home. The projects are split into 4 themed categories: Love & hearts, In the Country, Flying the Flag and Beside the Sea. They are all well written with large accompanying photos and lovely colourful diagrams.

If you are looking for bold contemporary projects to make for your home then this is the book for you.

Chic projects are divided into chapters: Love, Country, Flags, Seaside. Jan has gained a following for her designs. The felted projects mainly use blanket stitch. I like the Love section most of all with its throw, lips and Je t'aime pillows, heart notebook and rug and Love bag. The ideas are simple and translate well into felt. Templates are given for the projects. There is also a glossary of stitches. I think this book would be more fun if there were instructions on felting. It would also add a more unique angle to the projects. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

I found this book very disappointing. Aside from one or two projects her colour-schemes are very similar and somewhat dull, despite claiming to love using colour.
I also think that it was rather cheap to require the reader to upscale all of the templates; it's not difficult to include a fold-out sheet with full-sized templates, and not everyone runs to a computer and printer /, photocopier, or would know how to to enlarge the templates. If I had paid high-street bookshop prices for this book I would be spitting feathers.
