The quote is "Music has charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak." That is what this album does.

This is a love songs album, and even if one track is included from a musical, the lovely stirring Anthem, which is a song sung for love of country, you can make no mistake as to the meaning of the album.

Lee has taken his personal favorite love songs in this independent release and created an album with his take on them. Some tracks may be unfamiliar but you get drawn in. "Falling Slowly" is from the new Broadway musical Once and had previously won an Academy Award as best song of the year. "Your Song" becomes, in my opinion, a love song to his new daughter. You hear Lee's lovely voice in shadings throughout the album. "She" is the love he searches for and wants. "Hallelujah" the love he has. "Fix You" the love he will always protect.

This is an album from the heart which shows Lee, known to many as a very talented musical theatre performer, as an artist who can bridge genres. This shows especially in Jack Johnson's "At or With Me" which he turns it into a really rocky, honky tonk rhythm inducing song. You just want to move. I like it more than Jack Johnson's original. Lee really should release it as a single.

I love them all. The album is not overproduced, his voice shines through. Mason Neely has done a wonderful job producing it.

I most certainly highly recommend the album.

Lee has said in interviews that the songs he has chosen for his latest album are not just love songs (and not always conventional love songs at that) but more importantly songs that he himself loves, and this is very evident from the way he performs them.

In a selection ranging from the highly charged 'Anthem' from Chess (the only musical theatre number on the album, but one that sits very comfortably with its overall theme), through the more haunting melodies of Coldplay's 'Fix You' and Glen Hansard's 'Falling Slowly' and classics such as 'She' and 'Hallelujah, to Jack Johnson's more upbeat 'At Or With Me', the emphasis is on simple but classy arrangements (from producer and musical director, Mason Neely) which really allow the lyrics and Lee's beautiful voice to shine through.

Highly recommended!

I must admit I bought Lee Meads first 2 albums as I liked his voice, but wasn't struck on a lot of the tracks. However this 3rd album is an Indie Release and the song inclusion and the musical arrangements are far better.

I started quietly on track 1 thinking 'back ground music' and it's so pretty I tweaked it a bit to hear the music box twinkling merrily through. Cool guitar riff on track 2 (Sail away), and back to beautiful simplicity on Your Song on track 3.

Then as I'm singing along through tracks 4 & 5 I've got the volume cranked up a fair bit!

Track 6 whisks me off to a little Bistro in Paris, Lee's vocal paired with violin and piano - just plain lovely.

Some albums suffer from trailing off in the final tracks, this one however just gets stronger; to the finale of Anthem, a great Musical Theatre number (from Chess).

It's called 'Love Songs' (but not as you know it!) I've added the second part; it's the most unlikely love album you'll come across and it feeds my Rock Soul too!

Love Songs
As usual, a wonderful CD from Lee, although I wish he had sung a little louder on some of the tracks. This however, did not detract from a very soothing and melodious CD. Read more
