This is a generous and truly excellent compilation comprising the A- & B-sides of the early singles on the Motown off-shoot label; MoWest and the 1st full Motown album from the ex-Spinners vocalist G.C. Cameron who sang the immortal "It's A Shame". There are 23-tracks of which 19 are very good to excellent and one classic Philly style ballad, "Let Me Down Easy" composed by the late, great Van McCoy. There is a third / third / third split of funk-burners, melodic steppers and ballads which brings a pleasing variety to the set especially since all these genres are performed equally ably by the consummate vocals of G.C. Cameron. Motown brought their A-team to assist Cameron put together the album and singles including such legends as Stevie Wonder, Syreeta, Marvin Gaye & Smokey Robinson with backroom players well known to the cognoscenti such as Willie Hutch and The Corporation also making an appearance, which begs the question why these mainly excellent songs and performances not do better? Of the funk tracks, the first single "Act Like A Shotgun" and the duet with Willie Hutch, "My Woman" stand out. The steppers have that fantastic early 70's Motown lushness (almost decadence) to them of which the stand outs are the B-side to Cameron's 2nd single, "You Are That Special One" and "Don't Wanna Play Pajama Games" penned by the inimitable Smokey Robinson. Of the ballads the stand out by a long way is the stone classic "Let Me Down Easy" which is without doubt one of the best Motown tracks of the early 70's. There are a number of other excellent tracks which just goes to highlight the injustice that G.C.

"if You're Not Gonna Love Me" reflects on the quality of this fine debut that unfortunately never got its due. So its great to see it get the full Expanded treatment. I was a serious Motown-head from 1964-1985 when Berry finally gracefully couldn't seem to go on without his Queen, Diana! I bought almost any album with any number of Motown logos and subsidiaries. I have regrettably been dragging my feet on the pricey commitment. But no more......I cannot resist any longer.
