A very strange collection of tracks on this Rhino CD, but a very welcome release none-the-less.
The first Ten Tracks come from Dionne's Scepter years, but only YOU'LL NEVER GET TO HEAVEN & I SAY A LITTLE PRAYER, both hit singles will be familiar to most, the other eight are from her many albums as well as a couple of B Sides.
Now we come to the remaining tracks taken from her 'Wilderness years with Warner Bros'
ONE LESS BELL, LOVE SONG. and a new version of CLOSE TO YOU are from the beautiful DIONNE album (WILL SOMEONE PLEASE RELEASE THIS ON CD) Dionne was still teamed with Bacarach & David at the time, and had added an extra E to her surname, but when the duo left the label, WB seemed not to know what to do with her. Holland/Dozier/Holland produced her next album with nothing very spectacular except the very beautiful YOU ARE THE HEART OF ME, later recorded by Mary Wilson of the Supremes. Dionne teamed up with the Spinners and the result was a No 1 hit single Then Came You. From the album of the same name comes SURE THING with Dionne's voice in high register mode on this soaring ballad. Track Of The Cat (another album that should be released on CD) was produced by Thom Bell and the combination of his production along side Ms Warwick's silky tones make JEALOUSY and WORLD OF MY DREAMS standout tracks. The final track is much sort after by Dionne's army of fans. I DIDN'T MEAN TO LOVE YOU was released as a single but withdrawn after three weeks. It's 6 minutes of pure delight with a no hold bars crescendo that's not been heard since Don't Make Me Over.
Performance and Quality is definately Five Star but this CD seems to me to be a strange mixture of tracks. Better I think would have been a compilation CD of the best of her Warner years, or better still the Five albums released in their entirity plus bonus tracks of unissued material which I'm sure must exist. Don't let this put you off buying this CD which is a excellent addition to the Warwick (with or without the extra E) collection.
