Book Description

Synthetic Phonics has grown to become the dominant approach in early literacy, attracting substantial resources from the Department for Education. The system enables new readers to recognise the individual sounds of English and to blend ('synthesise') them, building the confidence to tackle unfamiliar words without relying on memory or guesswork.

About the Author

Her successful education consultancy supports parents and teachers in the promotion of literacy skills. She is a passionate advocate of Synthetic Phonics:

4.0 out of 5 stars Bad Zombie Movie 26 Jun 2013
By S Riaz HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book is part of a a new reading series, "I love reading phonics", which has over 48 titles and six levels. This is a Level 6 book, which, according to the blurb on the back of the book, "focuses on letters that represent more than one sound and includes shorter and longer words that contain letters that represent more than one sound." I have been a reading mentor for many years and have used varying different reading schemes during that time. As with most of them, this seems to have both positve and negative aspects. However, saying that, it is reasonable to assume that teachers/parents will utilise varying different approaches in teaching reading, and a new reading series that focuses on phonics is useful; especially with the new Year 1 phonics test in place.

"Bad Zombie Movie" is a hardback book, but small enough for a child to hold comfortably - rather like a Ladybird book. The book contains lots of information for parents/teachers on phonics, reading tips and a pronounciation guide. This story focuses on three sounds made with the letters ie: igh as in tie, ee as in field and e as in friend. There are also a list of tricky words the child will come across. Obviously, it is a story about zombies, which will appeal to boys everywhere! Everything is ready on the set of Bad Zombie Movie, well, except for the zombie - who is determined to be good.... I have not seen a book from the first three levels, but from Level 4 on the books do require a reasonable reading ability. With readers who are beginning to be more fluent, and a good ability with tricky/sight words, they will give good practice in literacy skills.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zombie Phonics... Really? 14 May 2013
By Mr. G. Battle VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
It seems there is no safe haven from zombies. They are insidious.

By the time children have reached the ability to read at level six (latter year one and year two) parents should have at least have a basic concept of phonics. Should there still be a gap there is a fairly decent guide at the start to support you in aiding a child to maximise the potential from the book. The story itself is average, but there aren't many (any?) zombie books out there at this level. The illustrations are entertaining, maintaining smiles all around, so don't be concerned that there might be gruesome content.

A natural accompaniment to Plants vs Zombies, this quirky number might be gobbled up by zombie fans, nibbled at by others.

Getting my boys to read is extremely difficult but their love of zombies and monsters make this book an enticing read. A lovely story with nice pictures. I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reading this was hard. 25 Sep 2013
By Jack Chakotay VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Focusing on the combination "ie" which can have different phonics, this was a nicely laid out book with plenty of instructive material. The tale was hardgoing, but the accessibility of holding the book and reading the font was just right.

It was entertaining but my daughter went back to her Biff Chip and Kipper Oxford reading books for her nightly reads and has never asked for this since.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lively and easy to follow phonetics system 10 Sep 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a great little book with lively illustrations and the now ubiquitous theme of Zombies reaching out to first readers.

It's an easy to pick up and understand phonetics book that is a good size and with enough durability to withstand plenty of use. Good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated story 20 Aug 2013
By J. R. Atkinson VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The book is well illustrated and contains a very good description of phonics at the front of it, along with a pronunciation guide for the phonemes. I found this book handy for the information on phonics but it is very short.

just like the 5th book, i've got this tucked away and having flicked through it I can see it's only going to drive her reading through the roof, great illustrations which you would be hard pushed not to love. anything and any story line that helps or encourages your child to read is worth every penny and this is one of them

5.0 out of 5 stars Educational fun 13 Aug 2013
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book is level 6 synthetic phonics, which uses letter combinations that can have several sounds. Here we see "ie" in "niece", "tie", "friend". When I received it I thought it might be too tough for my 6 year old so was really chuffed when she read the whole thing (with a little assistance!). The pictures are really fun. Very colourful and of course there is a zombie (albeit a very nice one)! There is lots going on which can help with the understanding of the words and the story. The format of the book is hardback - ladybird book size, so great for bookshelves and the pages stay open nicely.
