Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest musical is both haunting and beautiful. I had been to see The Phantom of The opera in London, it was the best live theatre experience I'd ever had. I came out eager to hear the sequel, so bought the soundtrack. It's a completely different feel to Phantom. The story has moved on and is set in America, and the music style completely reflects this which in my opinion is not a bad thing.
Being a pianist 'Coney Island waltz' was an absolute joy to play. There are a few tricky passages and numerous key changes to challenge the fingers. It really is the perfect piece that encapsulates the excitement and wonder of the Phantom's magical new world.
I love the music of Love Never Dies, pieces like 'Beneath a Moonless Sky' and 'Once upon Another Time' exude romance with their beautiful melodies. You really feel the composer's passion in every note. I did however feel that the accompaniment to quite a few of the songs was too simple and relied too heavily on the melody which is more the singer's job.
I agree with some reviews that say there maybe isn't as rich a sound when certain songs are played on the piano. The left hand in particular could have been a little fleshed out with some more chords and arpeggios.
All in all I would certainly recommend buying this book, especially if you're a singer. The range required to sing the songs is vast and challenging.
The Lord has scored again with 'Love Never Dies'!
