Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The opening track leaves little doubt as to what is in store: "Tune In" is a brief, cut-and-paste collage of hits and near-hits from Duffy's previous incarnations--as New Romantic popette Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy, as lead singer of The Lilac Time and as the wilfully diverse solo artist Duffy--made to sound like a radio being flicked between stations. What follows on I Love My Friends is pretty much Duffy telling his own life story in song. What could have come across as a monumental self-indulgence is redeemed by a combination of Duffy's frequently miraculous way with a pop tune and a streak of self-deprecation a mile wide: the self-explanatory 17" begins "I was born in Birmingham but soon I would escape / With education incomplete and two songs on a tape." From that point on, Duffy dissects his life, with particular reference to the relationships that have punctuated it, with the somewhat bemused air of a man who has found a bunch of old letters in an ex-lover's cupboard. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars Me too, 20 Feb 2004

A bit of a mixed bag, this, but still with more than enough great entertainment to merit 5 stars. #1 stand-out track is the Eurovisual "You are" - surely one of the best pop songs ever written.

Stephen is on even more autobiographical form than usual, eg. in the songs "The Deal", "23" and "The Postcard". The best of these is "Eucharist" (on which he lets us know he'll always love us). Cheers, mate. The fun "17" and the Mediterranean "She belongs to all" are great tracks too. And you have to admire an artist who can put such opposite tracks as "Autopsy" and "Something good" on the same record.

There are one or two ropey pop songs on here but even Stephen can't be perfect all the time. :) We should thank our lucky stars he's still writing for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic!, 4 Jun 2007

There's not really much to say here except this is a great timeless record full of songs that you will love to listen to again and again. When you marry great melodies to chrisp production, beautiful arrangements and intelligent, involving lyrics you can't go wrong really. There are more addictive hooks here than one record should legally be allowed to have.

If Robbie has any sense and wants a massive hit record (and frankly he needs one after Rudebox), he should just have a word with Mr Duffy and just cover this album so that these songs get the sort of audience they deserve. :-)

Honestly, buy this and do yourself and your ears and your spirits a favour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stephen Duffy is a Pop genius, 1 July 1999
By Bradley Foote - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: I Love My Friends (Audio CD)
I've been a big fan of Duffy since his "Tin Tin" days when the single "Kiss Me" was released. Following him with The Lilac Time has been very enjoyable. If you have never heard Duffy before then get this disc!! Duffy's sound really has not changed all that much from his early days in the eighties, he just uses less synths now. The disc starts off perfectly, like someone searching on the radio dial, only Duffy songs are on all the channels. It the goes to "Eucharist" which is a great song. It has a bit of an edge to it, which is a little different for him. The song "You are" is my favorite. There is some good guitar work on this CD as well which gives it a strong power pop feel which was a pleasant suprise. This cd is a perfect cross over from the Lilac Time and has just enough of a twist to have a distinct Duffy solo sound to it. This is definately a keeper and one I will listen to for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power pop for the mature listener...., 1 Aug 1998
By Bradford R. Macleod - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: I Love My Friends (Audio CD)
Stephen Duffy has a history of writing pristine, hooky pop music--in the eighties as "Tin Tin" and "The Lilac Time" and more recently under his own name (as well as co-writing songs for Barenaked Ladies). "I Love My Friends" continues where his previous effort, "Duffy", left off. On "Duffy", Duffy moved away from the shimmering production and bucolic instrumentation of his Lilac Time period and added some distinctly rock elements (helped by producer Mitch Easter). On "I Love My Friends", he bridges the gap between the two. This album is bristling with melody and introspection. It seems like Duffy raided his diaries from adolescence through adulthood. And he sets it all to brilliant power-pop instrumentation--a cross between Matthew Sweet and Andy Partridge (the latter of whom produces two tracks here). Lots of sing-along melodies, hand claps and "ooohs" and "la's". Other guests in! clude Justin Welch (Elastica), Alex James (Blur), Rick Menck (Velvet Crush) and Aimee Mann. Fans of these folks can expect to love this album!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Duffy Does It Again...and again..., 17 Feb 2003
By T. Bradley Tucker - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: I Love My Friends (Audio CD)
Is there no end to this man's talent and creativity? Fortunately for us, it seems as if there isn't. Having been a fan of Stephen's folk-pop mastery in The Lilac Time since the late 80's, I must tell you that this (and all of his) edgier guitar pop sounds just as natural, as organic, and as beautiful as any of his TLT work. No songs will be skipped on this CD, I assure you....if you are a fan of XTC, Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Matthew Sweet, etc. you must own this album. Like the aforementioned artists, Stephen's work takes a perfectly modern stance while firmly shaking hands with the more "vintage" sounds of previous eras. If you need it in Beatlespeak, think Rubber Soul/Revolver. Just get it, and anything else of his you can get your hands on. OK?
