Book Description

24 Aug 2009
Love Me explores the insidious power of the global beauty industry and our collective insecurity, vanity and fear of ageing. In a series of compelling images which lodge firmly in our consciousness, Love Me negotiates the boundaries of art and documentary, reflecting a world we have created in which there are enormous social, psychological and economic rewards and penalties attached to the way we look. Over a period of five years Zed Nelson visited seventeen countries across five continents. In Love Me we meet cosmetic surgeons, anorexics, child beauty queens, bodybuilders, trainee models, housewives, porn stars, businessmen and soldiers signing up for breast implants.Whilst Nelsons subjects appear willing participants in an omnipresent culture of bodily improvement, they are also hapless victims at the mercy of larger social forces and locked into their insatiable craving for approval. While the subject are exposed, so too are we the viewer; our motives for looking, for inspecting, along with uncomfortable reminders of our own vanities, insecurities and pretensions.

A timely book that explores the human costs of the global beauty industry. Buy it if you've ever wondered whether we have gone too far in our pursuit of the ideal face and figure.

Photographer Zed Nelson's gaze is unflinching: he captures the fragile confidence of beauty contest hopefuls and the grisly detritus of cosmetic surgery procedures with equal cool precision. Yet the cumulative result is a sort of fierce compassion. Angry, urgent and beautiful - a celebration of human delusion.

saw the show at the ffotogallery in penarth, cardiff
bought the book on amazon.

show was superb.... zed nelson deserves his reputation as a thinker as well as being a technically good photographer so the project works brilliantly.

bought the book through amazon at just a bit over half price. feel a bit guilty about not supporting local booksellers but i'm retired and needs must.

superb example of a book documenting a very worthwhile show.

very highly recommended.
