DVD Description
This dark romantic comedy is the debut feature for director Yann Samuell. The film follows the intimate but twisted relationship between two would-be lovers, Julien (Guillaume Canet) and Sophie (Marion Cotillard), who first meet as eight-year-olds in inauspicious circumstances: Julien's mother is dying, while Sophie is suffering ferocious bullying at school. When Julien plays a practical joke on the children who are picking on Sophie, a close friendship evolves between the two, which is based on an ongoing game of dares and forfeits. As they grow older, the game increasingly becomes a power struggle as they use it to torment and embarrass each other--but could it really be an elaborate cover for the deep affection they hold for one another?

I'm not exactly big on romance movies, and my knowledge of foreign films are admittedly limited. So why I decided to buy this is unknown. It was based off another purchase I was looking at (and ultimately didn't buy) and I figured "Why not try this one first?"
Boy was I glad I did!
This movie is sweet, smart, funny and, without ruining the plot, quite a bit twisted. Long story short, I advise anyone who's looking for a romantic movie with a bit of an edge (and either speaks fluent french or doesn't mind subtitles) to get this movie and watch it over and over again!

Absolutely loved this film. Bought it after being recommended it by a teacher and loved it. It's typically french, with its fantasy parts, but really enjoyed watching it!

This is without a doubt my favourite love story! Beautiful idea throughout whole film without any of the cheesey stuff thats usually in romantic films. I always always cry and the end, you can watch this film over and over and it never loses its impact! Thank you to you who introduced my hollywood head to french films . . . j'taime!

Fantastic!
This is such a great film! I really enjoyed the ambiguity in regards to the plot. Both Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet are superb. My new favourite film.
