The central characters - Jack, Catherine and Gold - appear as a triangle of destructive internal forces, each of them threatened with lost love and potential tragedy.
Taussig draws on his own experiences, first, in his exploration of homelessness and its common facets of mental illness and alcoholism, and second, in his study of madness and the fine line between reason and unreason.
The result is a starkly honest tale of love, sex and obsession in the twenty-first century.
Set against a stark background of neo-Dickensian London, the novel delves deep into the multiplicitous nature of the self. The central characters - Jack, Catherine and Gold - appear as a triangle of destructive internal forces, each of them threatened with lost love and potential tragedy.

BEST BOOK READ THIS YEAR!!!!,
By
This review is from: Love and Mayhem (Hardcover)
This is a remarkable first novel written by Nick Taussig. In short, if you want to experience life through an emotional, intellectual and an almost hidden soul, Nick has managed this with pure perfection. "When fate's got it in for you there's no limit to what you may have to put up with". (Georgette Heyer)- Fate and love are apparent parallels in Nick's world. A riveting read.

The verdict ....,
This review is from: Love and Mayhem (Hardcover)
Love and Mayhem keeps your attention from the first page which is rare. The depth of this novel demonstrates the sharp and creative mind of Taussig and gives us all a reality check. I am looking forward to reading his next book. This is a writer to watch!

One of the best books I have ever read,
By A Customer
This review is from: Love and Mayhem (Hardcover)
I have a very short attention span when it comes to books and everything really so this must be a good book as I didn't once loose interest and actually read it in less than 2 days . One of the best features about the novel is that everyone can relate to it, it is not just about love but about society as a whole and the preassures within it that cause some of the biggest social ills (homelessness, alcoholism, depression, etc.) It also led me to look at things in a different light, maybe things are not as they seem, maybe that homeless man that i pass everyday on my way to work isn't there because he is too lazy to get a job instead maybe he is there because he wants to be and because he chooses to be and maybe we as a society are in the wrong for condemning him for it and insisting that it is not 'right' for him to live on the streets. The predominant theme of love within the book, is also an interesting one. Again it is something that everyone can relate to and it offers a range of different questions and insights into what love is to different people. For some people it is restricting, for others liberating both of these sides of it are shown in the novel and one of the main questions raised is that can love ever exist in its true form in modern society. I fully reccomend this book whether you are looking for a bit of light reading or something more thought provoking as this novel certainly fits both of these categories!!
