Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A return to roots of sorts, Love & Life finally reunites Mary J Blige with the producer who made her the bona fide R&B star she is today, Sean "Puffy/P Diddy" Combs. Arguably, Combs needs the reunion more than she does--since masterminding Blige's first two albums, What's the 411 and My Life, his production kudos has suffered at the hands of his rapping and image, while she's gone from strength to strength. Keen to make her sixth album an event, Puffy pulls out all the stops, dusting off his taste and imagination, and thumbing his Rolodex for a better class of guest, including Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Eve, Dr Dre and Method Man. But it's the Blige/Combs chemistry that's the main attraction. Blige's lived-in gospel cry demands a superior cut of ghetto fabulous backing track, and Puffy delivers them in spades, from the vintage blaxploitation grooves of "Don't Go", "Press On" and "Ooh!", to the cruising hip-hop soul of "When We" and "It's a Wrap" and the pneumatic clatter of single "Love @ 1st Sight".

On the downside, at 20 tracks, Love & Life is a long album, and with many songs sounding like brilliant ideas half finished, it feels even longer. Consequently, true winners are lost in the vague but pleasing mire, which marks this as a collection of stylish background music rather than the show stopping Mary J we're used to. --Dan Gennoe

Ooh! Sensational! 28 Aug 2003
Format:Audio CD
I could go on and on for a thousand words about how amazing this album is, but I'm not gonna. I'm simply going to tell you that if you have any of MJ's albums from 'What's the 411?' onwards then you MUST buy 'Love and Life'. The absolute queen of hip-hop inspired soul is back and has never sounded hotter. From the lead off single 'Don't Go' through to 'Love @ First Sight' we're given hard beats, gorgeous vocals (will she always sound troubled by life?, let's hope so) and life-affirming lyrics. Then we hit track 11 'Friends', which is one of the best tracks she's ever recorded. You can feel the anger inside her when she says 'Get me another track immediately' after one of her best vocal performances ever. Feel the pain; feel the love; feel the hip-hop beats. This is not Mary doing commercial, easy-listening pop/RnB/soul; this is Mary doing what only she - and no one else- can do: the best hip-hop/soul albums around.

Love & Live This 15 Nov 2004
Format:Audio CD
Mary J Blige can never ever do wrong her voice is so emotional and powerful she's one of the true diva's
Love & Life is Mary's 6th full studio album its probably one of her best albums shes back with Puffy on this one i usually hate him but when he works with Mary hes so much better

1.Love & Life Intro (Featuring Jay-Z & P.Diddy)/It's a good intro actually with a cameo from Jay-Z he's flow is great 10/10

2.Don't Go/One of the best songs on the album its so great and i no everyone can relate to this "Sometimes I Say Things To Hurt U" come on we're all guilty of it the breakdown on this is excellent 10/10

3.When We/Ok it says in the booklet that this Samples "I Want You" butit sounds more like "Just To Keep You Satisfied" its a great song the lyrics are so meaningful 10/10

4.Not Today (Featuring Eve)/After appearing on "Where I've Been" on No More Drama Eve duets with Mary Again the Dr Dre produced track was the title track for Barbershop 2 its got an infectious beat Eve's flow it excellent and was a smash hit 10/10

5.Finally Made It (Interlude)/She's just sayin that shes spiritually successful it actually a good interlude the tribulations & trials we all go thru jus tryna do the right thing its very positive "Never Give Up" 10/10

6.Ooh!/I didn't like this at first the beat was too hip-hop for the lyrics but it's an ok song she was gonna release this as single i dunno why she didn't i think it would have done well the jazzy saxophones in the background are a nice touch 10/10

7.Let Me Be The One (Featuring 50 Cent)/I was very very sceptical when i saw that 50 Cent was on this as i think he's talentless and has nothing to say but this isn't a bad song i feel he should have been left off it but its good anyway 8/10

8.Love @ 1st Sight (Featuring Method Man)/Now a rap star worth havin' on your album workin together once b4 in the past theyre back together with the 1st single it samples A Tribe Called Quest's "Hot Sex" which is also a great song this song is flawless its a very strong song great vocals 10/10

9.Willing & Waiting/Samples the Atlantic Starr smash hit song "When Love Calls this song isnt one of my favourites but its worth listenin' it's very old school and easy listenin' 8/10

10.Free (Interlude)/This is a nice interlude she's just tellin' us what shes seen over the years which have made her a strong black woman all she wants to be is free great 'Lude 10/10

11.Friends/By far the strongest track on the album the power of the lyrics Jill Scott uses the same sample on a track frm her 2nd album its the Barry White song "Mellow Moods Part I" I love this song ive put this on repeat so many times its just so so true it's all about friends she's obviously been there with the fake friends 10*/10

12.Press On/A gritty hip-hop beat which makes the lyrics stand at even more its a great song the chorus is probably the best part a nice soulful song 10/10

13.Feel Like Makin' Love/One of her fans favourite songs frm this album it is a nice song but i wouldnt go as far as to say its my favourite its a bit of a lacklustre 7/10

14.It's A Wrap/This was the 3rd single to be lifted frm the album but in th US only its a great song its about a woman findin out her mans been cheatin and she aint takin no more the video was like a mini movie which starred Mary her self and Blair Underwood (u might reckognise him as the black man Miranda was datin'in Sex & The City what a hottie!!!) Great song 10/10

15.Message In Our Music (Interlude)/I love the beat to this there's a song in the film "Baby Boy" which has the beat its so old skool it also sounds like the song frm Aaliyah' One In A Million "Girl Like You" nice interlude 10/10

16.All My Love/I don't really like this its a filler track don't really listen to it 6/10

17.Special Part Of Me/Aww this song is so sweet a really good slowjam this is obviously dedicated to her Boyrfriend/Fiancé 10/10

18.Ultimate Relationship (A.M)/It's a nice acoustic song but it's a lil on the long side a good way to end the album i wonder if she'll do a "P.M" version??? 10/10

***Bonus Tracks***

19.Didn't Mean/Taken from the Bad Boys II soundtrack i used to really like this song but its a bit dated now 8/10

20.If I Don't Love You This Way/I was honestly hoping for the Mary/Sting collabo i think thats reall sweet but this is evven better this is the International Bonus Track it has a nice guitar beat great song 10/10

Overall Love & Life is one of the best records she has under "What's The 411" "Share My World & "No More Drama"
20 tracks i feel is a bit long but about 15 of them are great so u can't really go wrong when this record is so strong

Top 5 Love & Life Tunes
1.Friends
2.Don't Go
3.Love @ 1st Sight
4.It's A Wrap
5.Ooh!/Not 2day/ All The Interludes

Keep it up Mary!!!

Feel the SOUL 18 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've bought earlier Mary J CD's and found them too hip-hop and dark for my taste, apart from a few tracks. I took a chance on this latest offering - based purely on 2 tracks I heard on the radio.
I'm pleased I paid the money and now own what has got to be Mary's finest CD to date - quality from start to finish, with a very polished production and a top quality recording.
This set has got the 'warmth' that I feel was missing from earlier material. The lady even honours the mighty Atlantic Starr on "Willing and Waiting", sampling "When Love Calls" creating an infectious retro groove.
The only annoyance is the over use of the scratched vinyl sound effect - which is not exactly original and is tiresome nowadays.
This aside, highly recommended.
