Wonderful book! 9 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was the first China Bayles mystery I read and it has made me want to read others. I found the heroine very likeable and easy to identify with. She is strong and smart but also makes deep personal attachments. As a gardener myself, I was particularly drawn to the herb shop and China's own gardening experiences that pepper the text.

Finally! A softer side of China Bayles! Kudos to Susan Wittig Albert for showing us how we all change when confronted with a life-shattering crisis. Too often, the hero/heroine in books of this genre remains static. But here, the author has allowed her character to grow and respond to a crisis in her life. It is easy for me to understand how China could befriend Margaret, McQuaid's girlfriend. In many cases, when the man in your life turns to another woman, you obsess about her: what is she like? what does he see in her? etc. Sometimes we can't help but respect the enemy; Sometimes we even grow to like.love the enemy. Thank you, Ms. Wittig Albert for reminding us that life is not black and white, but many, many shades of gray and that the heart is complex...

Good Mystery but... 17 Feb 1998
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This may be the last China Bayles for me. I love the series but I had a real hard time with the personal side of China's life. I can understand McQuaid's temptation, I can even understand his circumstances (although why it had to be that severe is questionable), but what I can't understand is how China befriended Margaret. She's a better woman than me. I enjoyed the plot of the mystery and visiting with old friends. I'll need to read the synopsis of Chile Death before I'll invest my reading time with China again
