Book Description

4 Jun 2009

With the bookshop where she works about to close, Laura Horsley, in a moment of uncharacteristic recklessness, finds herself agreeing to help organise a literary festival deep in the heart of the English countryside. But her initial excitement is rapidly followed by a mounting sense of panic when reality sinks in and she realises just how much work is involved - especially when an innocent mistake leads the festival committee to mistakenly believe that Laura is a personal friend of the author at the top of their wish-list. Laura might have been secretly infatuated with the infamous Dermot Flynn ever since she studied him at university, but travelling to Ireland to persuade the notorious recluse to come out of hiding is another matter.

Determined to rise to the challenge she sets off to meet her literary hero. But all too soon she's confronted with more than she bargained for - Dermot the man is maddening, temperamental and up to his ears in a nasty case of writer's block. But he's also infuriatingly attractive - and, apparently, out to add Laura to his list of conquests ...

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Stars 19 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I love Katie Fforde's older books but have hated her last few (Practically Perfect and Wedding Season) and was not willing to make the mistake of buying this one before reading it first! Having got it out of my local library I was pleasantly surprised. Whilst not as much of a page turner as her older books (Wild Designs being a personal favourite) it is a large step up in quality from her more recent books. As I own the majority of her books, I will be purchasing this one to add to the shelf and will read it again I am sure. This is a pretty good read, but newcomers to this author should choose a title from her back catalogue first.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful 14 Jun 2010
Format:Hardcover
So Laura breaks into Dermot's house, which is - of course - a tip and being unable to wake him, she finds nothing better to do than clean his kitchen and his bathroom, wash his clothes, hoover the living room and do his shopping. Then for a split second she worries whether she would now be thrown out of some feminist club for doing so - I don't think she'd ever get in if she tried. How truly truly awful and full of cliches. But worse than the cliches is the language - ever character in the book talks as though they are 55 and live in the country. None of them have any personality but they all get on like a house on fire, so we are told. The two romantic novelists who feature are of course the most lovely ladies you could ever meet whilst everyone who writes anything else is a baddy. How ironic also that Katie Fford bangs out about poor writing and flat characters in a book full of exactly that. If the writing was a bit better, then the attitudes promoted in this book would be really arrogant and offensive - this way it's just embarrasing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Embarrassingly weak 8 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
Where to start with this book? Katie Fforde may have made her name with undemanding chick-lit on the light and fluffy side, but sadly, 'Love Letters' is about as light and fluffy as a suet pudding. Her heroine is such a drip - repeatedly insisting that she's too terrified and useless to do...well, just about anything, really - that it's a miracle she's not trembling in a corner on a full-time basis, while her wild-Irish-writer hero is a check-list of cliches (drop-dead gorgeous, full of blarney, always up for 'the crack', etc etc). Yet the permanently-quaking Laura is mysteriously capable of running a literature festival, co-hosting a writing course and bringing her infallible intellectual judgement to bear on manuscripts submitted by aspiring writers. The plot-device used to ensure that boy-loses-girl (so they can ultimately be reunited) is laughably feeble. And as for the insight it offers into the world of authors and writing...well, several times we're smugly told that only the very best can ever hope to be published - which is a bit rich given the quality of the writing and editing on display here. Sorry to be harsh, but as Katie so often reminds us, it's a cut-throat world out there.
