Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Its A Good Album 8 Feb 2002
By J. Kerr
Format:Audio CD
This is what I would call an average album. There are some stunning songs on this CD, but as a whole the album fails on the weight of some of the poorer tracks, noteable Heart of Rome, Life, Only Believe and Cindy Cindy

The standout is the superb Got My Mojo Workin' this is worth the price of the CD itself, its hard driven and utterly sensational.

The title track was first recorded by Elvis in 1966, he recorded it again here, giving a better performance.

Other good tracks are When I'm Over You
and If I Were You, both country tracks that would not be out of place on the Elvis country album.

This is a good album, but not near his best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love Letters...again. 21 Jan 2007
Format:Audio CD
This album is considered to be one of the least popular in his seventies' catalogue of work, and when compared to such landmarks as "Elvis Country" and "That's The Way It Is" then this is most probably the case.

However, there are some stand-out performances contained on this album and some favourites include "When I'm Over You", "This Is Our Dance" and "Cindy, Cindy". A number of fans and critics are not too keen on the likes of "Heart of Rome" and "Life" but both these tracks hold quite a bit of charm for me. The presence of full orchestration on most of the tracks doesn't appear to enhance the proceedings, for example the jam medley of "Got My Mojo Working"/"Keep Your Hands Off Of Her" didn't really need the odd burst of brass - but it still remains as one of the album highlights. Why Elvis decided to re-work the title track "Love Letters" is beyond comprehension and I feel with the strings arrangement doesn't even come as close to his 1966 hit recording, which is pure beauty in itself.

Nevertheless, this CD album is still worth a buy just to hear the aforementioned recordings.

Just like most of 70 Elvis' albums. Cindy cindy, If I were you, and Heart of Rome are my favorite ones. Got my Mojo Working is a good See See Rider-type of rocker. lol

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep your hands off of it! 5 Nov 2005
By Johnny Heering - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This was the third album to feature songs that Elvis recorded at the "Nashville Marathon" of June, 1970. As the third album, it's not quite as good as the previous two, but it does feature some strong material. Okay, "This is Our Dance" stinks, but the rest of the album is good. Strangely, the album opens with "Love Letters", which Elvis had already recorded back in 1966. The story goes that pianist David Briggs was never satisfied with his playing on the original version, so he talked Elvis into rerecording the song. The original version is better, to my taste. My personal favorites here are "Got My Mojo Working" and "Cindy, Cindy". Elvis fans should enjoy this CD.
