Amazon.co.uk Review
Its ads portrayed The Love Letter as a wacky farce, while critics largely ignored it, presuming it to be a vanity project from Kate Capshaw (better known as Mrs. Steven Spielberg). But The Love Letter is neither; on the contrary, it's a low-key but surprisingly rich and touching film about love, illusions, and regret. Helen (Capshaw), a bookseller in a small seashore town, discovers an unsigned love letter that's fallen into the cushions of a couch in her store. The letter doesn't say who it's for, but Helen assumes it's for her and starts wondering who sent it. One would expect this to lead to a whirling comedy of mistaken identities, but after some amusing daydream moments, the movie follows its story with subtlety and nuance. The characters behave according to their own needs and desires, rather than the demands of standard Hollywood goofiness. The performances--from a cast including Tom Selleck, Tom Everett Scott, Ellen DeGeneres, newcomer Julianne Nicholson, and others--are uniformly unforced and natural. Viewers weary of the hyped-up, absurd emotional climaxes of most so-called romantic comedies will find a respite here. The Love Letter is a genuinely charming film. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Mellow mauve mood......, 3 Feb 2001
By Ms. C. J. Mcelwee "Caroline McElwee" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This film is based on the novel of the same name by Cathleen Schine. It is rare to be able to say that in this instance, by making a few minor changes, the director actually improves on an already enjoyable original work. The story of 40-something Helen who runs a book shop in a small seaside town. Whilst sitting to go through her mail she finds tucked down the back of the battered sofa a love letter. The plot hinges on the fact that during the course of the film, a number of people come upon this beautiful love letter and believe it is written to them, and how it changes their life. To say more would be to spoil this lovely mellow film. Expertly pitched performances from Kate Capshaw, Ellen DeGeneres, Tom Selleck, Blythe Danner and others - which keep the piece tender without falling into sentimentality. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to watch smile inducing..., 27 Jan 2006

I love this movie. The well chosen cast are superb at creating a perfect mood and motion to this charming story. I pop it on every now and then and a smirk always comes to my face.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading, 12 Jun 2009
I'm not reviewing The Love Letter. I'm reviewing the description of The Love Letter. I was led to believe, from the initial cast list beside the film title, that Woody Allen was in this film. Just to warn any Allen fans, he is not. Miffed.
Who knows, The Love Letter might be a decent movie. A film doesn't need, in order for it to be decent, Woody Allen in it. Sometimes it actually helps if he's not.
Anyway. Never written a review before. This could be my last. Writing one for all the world to see (on such a high profile film) provokes a strange emotional mixture: on one hand, of pseudo-responsibility; on the other, loneliness.

(Ah, it seems to have been changed now. Amended in less than 24. Impressive. But makes my above comments even more redundant than they were before! Maybe the majority of communication is redundant anyway. Discuss.)
