This album you just gotta love! I had a single from this album when I was a kid - Booty Ooty/Jet Plane, it was - and I loved this funky soul right from the start. The album has everything: groove, soul, funk, rhythm, the voice, the guitar, wicked lyrics (Booty Ooty), a balad (Love Jones or Children of the Universe) and an irresistable rap song (Telephone Bill, from the guy who practically invented rapping) , ... After all these years (1980), this is still an album that stands. Johnny "Guitar" Watson is king and of great influence to many!

One of the Blues Funketeer's finest 3 May 2008
By Andre Heeger - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Guitar Watson plays guitar like no other. Got to, since he's a blues man. What? you'd say, didn't he do "Real Mother For Ya". Sure he did, he also did Booty Ooty (which is on this one), Gangster Of Love (on Giant - and which Steve Miller borrowed for The Joker), I Don't Wanna Be President (on What The Hell Is This? - on fuel shortage), I even dare to say he was one of the first rappers around when nobody except maybe Isaac Hayes did things like that.
So WHAT is Johnny Guitar - or better was, since he died in Japan in the middle of a performance.
Johnny was one of the best, period. He played the guitar - and most other instruments, composed, arranged and produced. He was funny as hell: You Can Stay But The Noise Must Go (come on, who else would come up with that?). Check out the covers, one better than the other.
You want to dance, take Johnny, you want to love, same thing. In for a laugh, go for Johnny. Anything else on your mind? Johnny delivers.
You have this one yet? What do you think I'm doing here, huh? Get it, now (tm)@$*'¿Á!!!
Enjoy!

GOIN UP IN SMOKE 10 Feb 2008

1980 RELEASE FROM JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON, THIS ALBUM CONTAINS A WHOLE RANGE OF JOHNNY G'S TALENT, FROM THE EMINENTLY DANCEABLE BOOTY OOTY, TO THE BEAUTIFUL BALLAD LOVE JONES, TO THE PRE-HIP-HOP RAP TELEPHONE BILL. JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON REINVENTED HIMSELF AND HIS MUSIC SO MANY TIMES, HE WAS ALWAYS AHEAD OF THE CURVE. I DIDN'T LIKE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH AT FIRST, BUT A FEW MORE LISTENS MADE ME APPRECIATE IT A LOT MORE.

Love Jones? 2 July 2007
By Andre S. Grindle - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Johnny Guitar Watson didn't really need to prove his blues humor with funk formula was still cooking with gas-the music said it all. This is not a whole lot different from any of the great albums before it-"Booty Ooty" and even the wicked "Going Up In Smoke" are classic Johnny. The title ballad gets a lot of attention but it's really a very typical 70's slow jam-nice enough though but not exactly groundbreaking. There are two real finds on this album;the proto rap of "Telephone Bill" which takes a then totally almost futuristic style and marries it to another of Johnny's classic blues lyrical theme-in this case calling his new girlfriend "waaay after 9" to avoid another $500 dollar phone bill. The other big highlite is the loungy latin tinged "Close Encounters".The bonus tracks on the album are re recorded jams that showcase Johnny's guitar playing more then anything. This is sure to be a worthy addition to your Johnny Guitar Watson collection.
