Product Description

Product Description

That Love Is Everything, Johnny's masterful 1965 album of bal- lads, is finally out on CD is exciting enough, but on top of that we've included his unreleased album of songs taken from Broadway musicals! "Love Is Everything" reunited Mathis with frequent Columbia collaborator Glenn Osser, while only a couple of tracks have ever seen release in any format from the Broadway album, which was recorded during 1964 and 1965. Essential and rare!

5.0 out of 5 stars WELCOME RELEASE OF JOHNNY'S RARE MERCURY ALBUMS 30 Oct 2012
By A. POLLOCK TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The longevity of the Johnny Mathis recording career has now spanned fifty-six years with every hope of a new album being released for the on-going pleasure of his vast fan-base. However, backtracking to his earlier output, those with worn-out vinyl will welcome the fact Real Gone Music has invaded the vaults and selected a batch of Mathis albums for release on CD for the first time and they are special as they represent the period when the singer left US Columbia in 1963 and signed a three-year contract with Mercury Records following the promise of financial gain, artistic control and ownership of the recorded masters (Global Records). So far so good, but despite Johnny's usual high vocal standards and excellent choice of material, these Mercury albums somehow failed to reach their deserving public despite the UK distribution deal through HMV, with the result they soon disappeared from view except for selected tracks chosen for THE GLOBAL MASTERS two-disc release in 1997 and a Christmas collection.

A reunion with Glenn Osser with whom Johnny worked with at Columbia Records during the late Fifties, was a good omen and LOVE IS EVERYTHING (1965) recalls their previous collaboration with the emphasis naturally favouring romantic ballads and most choices emanating from either Broadway or popular movies. PEOPLE, YOUNG AND FOOLISH and DANCING IN THE DARK represent the former whilst NEVER LET ME GO, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER and LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY bring back big-screen memories with singer and orchestra in perfect harmony. However, there's room for recent pop hits like GO AWAY LITTLE GIRL, ONE MORE MOUNTAIN and a Gordon Jenkins standard-in-the-making THIS IS ALL I ASK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mathis at a vocal peak 8 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The two albums on this CD are so widely different I almost wonder why they were paired (it looks like proximity of recording dates). "Love Is Everything" is very much Johnny Mathis in 1964 going back to the style of his very successful collaborations with Glenn Osser about five years earlier. Anyone who has heard the Mathis album "Heavenly" from 1959 will instantly feel at home with the style here. However, there are a couple of surprises. "Young and Foolish" is extraordinarily powerfully sung with quite a different feeling to the wistful regret that the song's lyrics might suggest. And the song "One More Mountain" is an absolute gem.

What is disappointing is the sound. On some tracks, it is absolutely excellent. However, on a couple, particularly the opening track "Never Let Me Go" there is considerable loss of detail and I am surprised other detailed and knowledgeable reviews haven't mentioned this. It hit me so strongly when I put the CD on to play that I dug out my own CD copy of the mint condition LP that I have of this record, and confirmed that the track on this CD sounds muffled by comparison. I can only assume that someone was over enthusiastic with the noise reduction software or the master tape has suffered damage in the intervening years (the sound quality on other songs is so good, I am assuming that the remastering was from the original tapes). Other songs have considerable distortion (though this may be inherent in the original tapes).

"Broadway" is just superb - Mathis swings hard and makes songs associated very strongly with other artists "Once In A Lifetime", "Manhattan", "Hello Dolly" absolutely his own. I simply can't understand some of the negative comments directed at these cuts, but I suppose many people only like "romantic" Johnny Mathis.
