Book Description

"Mom, I'm gay." With three little words, gay children can change their parents' lives forever. Yet at the same times it's a chance for those parents to realize nothing, really, has changed at all; same kid, same life, same bond of enduring love.

Twenty years ago, during a walk on a Mississippi beach, Ellen DeGeneres spoke those simple, powerful words to her mother. That emotional moment eventually brought mother and daughter closer than ever, but not without a struggle. Coming from a republican family with conservative values, Betty needed time and education to understand her daughter's homosexuality -- but her ultimate acceptance would set the stage for a far more public coming out, one that would change history.

In Love, Ellen, Betty DeGeneres tells her story; the complicated path to acceptance and the deepening of her friendship with her daughter; the media's scrutiny of their family life; the painful and often inspiring stories she's heard on the road as the first non-gay spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaigns National Coming Out Project.

With a mother's love, clear minded common sense, and hard won wisdom, Betty DeGeneres offers up her own very personal memoir to help parents understand their gay children, and to help sons and daughters who have been rejected by their families feel less alone.

From the Author

tell of book's broad, general appeal and of book tour
I hope lots of you will read and enjoy and learn from Love, Ellen. It is truly a story of a mother/daughter journey - together and separately. I tell of my journey to acceptance of my gay daughter. It's also a detailed story of what it takes to build a career from ground zero based on Ellen's letters to me over the years. I think many women will relate to my journey from a traditional, conservative background, through troubled marriages, through cancer, to being a strong, happy, independent woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had the courage to give this to my mum! 16 Oct. 2000
By A Customer
Ellen Degeneres decided to live her life in truth. After reading this book you can definitely see where she got her courage and strength from. Whether gay or straight you have got to admire the whole Degeneres clan for their support of Ellen and each other. Betty Degeneres' book touched every emotion inside my body and as a woman who is not 'out' I wish she was my mum! It is a book about truth, in Ellen's life, in Betty's life and hopefully in my life to come - because the book does give you strength to want to reach this place where she is with this mother/daughter relationship. It is a wonderful and cohesive journey throughout and shows us a new dimension to this already multi-talented woman. Betty would probably say that she was just a regular mother, but if there were more mothers/fathers/sisters/brothers/friends/co-workers, even strangers, like her in this world there would be less people like me. I have read the book three times in as many months and it will always remain one of my treasured possessions.
And, as they say in America 'GO BETTY'!

I'm a gay male who purchased a copy of Betty's book for my own reading. By the time I was done, I bought two more copies - one for my parents and another for my sister. I realized that they might benefit from a book written from "their" point of view.
It's so important that messages like Betty's get out to the world. Not just the gay and lesbian world, but the world in general. Simply put - "Love one another."
I can only hope and wish that Oprah or some other high-profile media outlet picks up a copy and gives this book the promotion it deserves.
Isn't it funny how when kids are growing up, we tell them all just how special they are.... And then when they go and show just how special they are - what our responses can be.
Thank you Betty, for writing a book from your heart and soul. Nothing like this could be easy, and I thank you again for telling such a personal story so that it might benefit others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, Witty and Insightful! 29 Aug. 1999
By A Customer
This book was an excellent source of encouragement and education for those who are gay and their family members. Betty Degeneres looks at sexuality and the issues that it brings in society today. She speaks of her journey after finding out her daughter Ellen is gay and the acceptance and closeness that came along afterwards through the years. This book is excellent reading for anyone with gay family members or friends, and for those of us who are still struggling with our own sexuality. I loved this book! Thank you Betty!

5.0 out of 5 stars love and understanding 5 April 1999
By A Customer
Being french, I have followed the coming out of Ellen through newspapers and TV (CNN mostly) and a friend who sent me THE episode. I must say that I admire Ellen Degeneres more than anyone else. I also am always amazed at the look of love that Betty Degeneres shows towards Ellen and Anne and though this love should be the norm, it often is not. I've never talked to my mother the way Ellen did but I love my mother more than anyone in the world. I think she knows but I still don't know how to tell her. I hope that a french translation of this book will exist and I can offer it to her. I think it's the perfect book for non gays and gays, for individuals and familys. If Betty DeGeneres goal was to open eyes, minds and hearts, I can assure you that she has succeeded. I often cried reading the book and I must say that the letter written by Ellen to her mother on page 8 was terrible for me to read. The love between them is so strong that it made me feel strong too...Thank you Betty DeGeneres and thank you Ellen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating,warm-hearted read. 23 April 1999
By A Customer
I found Betty's memoir to a learning experience on how to accept a gay friend & or family member.I found that it took a long time for Betty to realize that Ellen was gay and counld'nt change for her sake.I enjoyed reading about how Ellen was as a child, her early struggles in the entertainment business, and dealing with her internal guilt with her sexual orientation.I would definately reccommend Betty's book to anyone who has a difficulty with homosexuality and the effects of people around them.

This book was so touching, it made me realize that being gay isn't a bad thing at all. I admire Ellen, and I love her show. I look up to her even more for her courage, and strength through all the tabloids, and chit-chat! 2 thumbs up for Betty and Ellen!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very touching and Inspiring and motivational 4 April 1999
By A Customer
Betty Degenerous gives a very open and honest look into the troubles which face families of gay and lesbian children. She is by far one of the most motivational writers with first hand knowledge on this subject. The book is one that ALL parents should read regardless if they are secure in the thought that their children are gay or not. This is a book which prioritizes responsibilities as a parent and gives clear light into the art of unconditional love which unfortunatly is lacking in todays society by large percentages of families.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and positive 18 April 1999
By A Customer
It's horrifying that a persons sexual orientation can alienate them from their parents and family members - isn't home the one place a son or daughter should feel safe and loved?
Betty's story is as sad as it is funny - but ultimately, it is uplifting and positive - be proud!
