Dull, boring, couldn't wait for it all to end, 8 Sep 2004

One bit of advice: don't judge the book by the cover. This is a dull, boring read. Too many characters, too predictable (although other chick lit reads can be too, at least they sparkle unlike this one). Unlikeable heroine with past mental illness, need I say more? Ick, ick, ick

Love Bug by Zoe Barnes, 3 Aug 2003
This review is from: Love Bug: Don't get bitten! (Paperback)
The story is about Laurel Page and her management of an old fashioned dating agency where no computers or modern techniques are used, and must not be used by order of the owner, Mr Case, for 12 months. Laurel has had trouble with a past romance and buries herself in her work but finds herself constantly frustrated by the lack of control she has over the business.
Zoe Barnes, sets her story in Dovecote & Marsh a dated dating agency which the main character, Laurel, describes as 'walking into a Charles Dickens Theme park'. Laurel is hell bent on making a go of the agency which she hopes to buy. Her co-workers stories are also told and intermingle nicely with Laurels. You are entertained by the dating agency members, one of which is Laurels best friend whom she fell out with sometime before, for reasons which become apparent.
The book starts of very slowly, and although I expected it to pick up the pace, it didn't until towards the end. Although a slow read, and at times I wanted to put it down and do something else, I persevered and was pleased with the outcome.
The story itself is quite funny and has a lot of aspects that anyone of us can enjoy, humour, satire, romance and deception there is a little of everything.
My verdict: Not everyones cup of tea, a bit slow but a good read. If you like Jill Mansell, this will please you but expect a much slower pace.
