Everyone knows their Motown written and produced tracks (Supremes, Four tops, etc.) and soul lovers will be familiar with their Invictus and Hot wax artists (Freda Payne, Chairmen of the Board). But this is a great collection of some of the tracks Holland Dozier Holland produced and then put out with their own vocals. These items that have been hard to find for many years. "Slippin away" with the sound phasing at the end, and the amazingly soulful "Don't leave me starvin for your love" are my personal favourites.
This CD is better than the single CD album as it includes some B-sides.and instrumental versions. Two things missing for me (hence 4start not 5): The original single mix of "You took me from a world Outside" without the sax, and with a second vocal is this available anywhere on CD or download?) and the instrumental B side of "I'm so glad".
If you like the northern soul, and the HDH invictus recordings, you'll love this.

Format:Audio CD
HDH can't do anything wrong in my eyes and this 2 cd package exemplifies why. From the catchiness and simplicity of Don't Leave Me - "She's got her hat and coat before, but never made it past the door" to the beautifully wistful Where Did We Go Wrong - "Memories, precious memories, how they linger long after you've gone" these tracks have me hooked. I've been listening to HDH since the 70's and I still find something fresh and new with them.
This is currently the most reasonably priced collection available and Edsel deserve great credit for its issue and comprehensive sleeve notes from Tony Rounce.
Shame about the omitted tracks highlighted by the previous reviewer. Perhaps Edsel can issue a rarities cd(s) and pick up on them, and other tracks from other Invictus/Hot Wax/Music Merchant artists which have not been released. It's still a big 5 stars from me. For soul fans it's an essential must-have.

As the other reviewer mentioned, this is not entirely all Lamont Dozier as a solo artist, but includes some of the Invictus material he recorded with Brian Holland, and some stuff by Holland alone. There is some great music on here, particularly "Why Can't We Be Lovers" and "Don't Leave Me." But in order to fill out the 2 CDs here, the reissue label fattened it up with a bunch of unncessary versions of the same songs; single mix, album mix, remix, ad nauseum. I think this would have made for a much better and more powerful single disc. Nevertheless, there is some terrific music on here, songs that will appeal to fans of 60s and 70s soul, Motown and beyond.

Really good CD for fans of 70's R&B/Soul. A couple good instrumentals on it. Would give it 5 stars, but the other disc in this 2 disc set is a Brian Holland release that is not really that great. Not terrible, but not great. Know what I mean??? Anyway, Lamonts Disc 1 is really worth having and im really glad i got it. In case a buyer out there doesnt know, Lomont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Edward Holland were the creative force behind The Supremes and The Four Tops in the 60's. The REAL good stuff.
