Book Description

5 Jan 2009
Cornelius Hedge finds it difficult enough to talk to people he does know let alone people he doesn't. So he's plunged into gloom when he is dragooned into driving the female friend of a colleague's wife through France. How on earth is he expected to make small talk from Boulogne to Montelimar? First impressions are not auspicious: the moment he introduces himself, the woman inexplicably bursts into tears. But by the time they've reached their destination, Cornelius has grown increasingly fond of the unassuming Katrina. She is interesting, entertaining, amusing; he'd actually like to see more of her. At their age however, the past has a habit of intruding on the present. Ex-husbands, ex-wives, selfish sisters and sulky teenagers all seem to conspire to thwart the budding romance. What's worse, both Katrina and Cornelius are hiding secrets from their past. Secrets that burst into the open - with rather surprising results.

4.0 out of 5 stars gentle and engaging look at love 18 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I immediately liked the style of the writing , and really wanted the 2 main characters to find a new love together. Characterisation was excellent with the reader increasingly understanding the characters as people as the novel developed. Gentle yet passionate story telling and great that the love interest were not young for a change. Heartwarming stuff with poignant moments - I shall read more of this writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE AFFAIR FOR GROWN-UPS 23 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I am so glad I tossed this book into my supermarket trolley( with the lettuce and tomatoes). Now I can look forward to reading the rest. I love it when you can't wait to read all the others. It's not often I feel like that. (Enid Blyton as a child, Mary Stewart as an adolescent and Jane Austen as a grown-up). Agree with all the other positive reviews. I cared about the characters, teared up at Cornelius and his determination to be alone in his troubles - I just wanted to hug him - sometimes you just see the child even in the middle-aged. I also found myself giggling and chortling throughout the book. It was cheerful and uplifting and the writing was good and insightful. It cheered me up and for that reason alone it deserves the highest recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely, easy to read story 1 May 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book having thoroughly enjoyed The Ex-wife's Survival Guide by the same author, and I certainly wasnt disappointed. It's a lovely, easy to read story with genuine humour.
There is considerable depth of characterisation, particularly with the two main characters who I felt were quite 'true to life', with all the "baggage" most of us carry through life.
Its always good to discover a new author whose books you enjoy. I'm now going to order Debby Holt's other two books. Keep on writing, Debby !

5.0 out of 5 stars This year's must read.....excellent book. 16 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I hadn't heard of Debby Holt but found the jacket summary interesting when perusing my mother's books. This is rare, but from the INSTANT I started reading this fascinating story I was with it, enjoying it, believing in it and was completely hooked.
The tale is beautifully written by a very talented writer. Debby doesn't 'ram' these characters or their thoughts down your throat but eases you in gently and lets you pick up where you know they will at some point without repetition.
This book is easy to read with fantastic characters and whilst there are some rather unlikeable sorts you can't help but be fascinated and it teaches you that although we are different and what goes around doesn't always come around, it is best to just get on with your life and be happy in your own skin because those with 'issues' have their own problems!
Strongly recommended. Well done Debby - and thank you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Debby Holt does it again 4 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
I've read all Debby Holt's books, and she never fails to engage, entertain and uplift me. This one is no exception. The story is gentle and funny and wise, the characters (even the ghastly Rose and Lewis) are people you just want to go on reading about, the French setting is wonderful. Katrina and Cornelius's scratchy and awkward relationship is a delight and Debby Holt's way of showing it to the reader is full of touching, sharp and intelligent observation. Her dialogue just sparkles, and is so vivid it could go straight from the page on to the screen - her books would make wonderful television. An unputdownable and fantastic read!

4.0 out of 5 stars What a lovely read! 12 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Debby Holt has created some lovely characters in this book. I rattled through this in a weekend. One of those books where you connect with the characters and feel a bit lonely when it's over!
