This dvd includes the five specials Louis made for the BBC in 2007 and 2008. These hour long shows are slightly different to the previous Weird Weekends and When Louis met... series in that they provide a more mature and sophisticated take on the weirdness out there, usually in America. The targets are less obvious and often less appealing than before.
The best is the gambling episode, in which he looks at Vegas from both the viewpoint of the gamblers and the casino owners. This demonstrates Louis at his most playful, amusing himself with people who are essentially good-natured other than that they waste every cent they don't have on gambling. In the same style is Behind Bars looking at prisoners and guards in San Quentin prison in which again the people, despite the situation, come over as being interesting people with interesting stories of personal crisis to tell. Only the occasional creepy person intrudes to worry you. To me that is the strength of these episodes and also the slight weakness of the others. To be entertained you need to enjoy being in the company of the wacky people he meets, and it's hard to feel much empathy with the characters in the other three episodes.
Hunting Holiday takes us to Africa and the people who like to shoot wild animals, no matter how endangered they are. Louis finds it hard to hide his disgust and so will you. The Most Hated Family is even worse and takes us to meet some people you'd never want to know. This episode seems to have been made purely to get your blood-pressure soaring as a fundamentalist religious group take their misapplied beliefs to illogical and nasty conclusions. Slightly back on form is Under the Knife looking at the cosmetic industry, but again it's hard to feel much compassion with the people he meets and in this case the revelations don't feel like anything new.
Despite some small reservations, these documentaries are ultimately entertaining and more sensible than the more frivolous ones of old, and Louis and his style remains as engaging as ever.
