Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

The brilliance of Louis C.K.'s semiautobiographical sitcom came into focus in just the second episode, in which a caustic poker game among comedians turned into a trenchant discussion of homophobia in comedy, with Louie himself uncomfortably on the hook for things he's said. Every episode of Louie has moments like this, when what's funny peels away to reveal surprising insights into human behaviour. Louis C.K.'s humour cuts through social illusions in the tradition of George Carlin and Lenny Bruce, but with a unique sense of ruefulness; Louis C.K. doesn't seem angry so much as perplexed and frustrated. He tries to get motivated but sags into an orgy of ice cream and marijuana. On a date, he faces a teenage bully and ends up humiliated--and then he follows the boy home, where he ends up sitting with the boy's father, commiserating about parenting. Even scenarios that could be fodder for conventional gags, like going to the dentist, end up in strange places; under the influence of the dentist's gas, Louie hallucinates talking to Osama bin Laden and convinces him not to be a terrorist. Much of the comedy revolves around Louie's status as a divorced dad with two daughters. Arranging play dates, buying a dog, and trying to give the girls moral lessons are all opportunities for chaos, embarrassment, and examinations of the subtle but potent social forces that shape our lives. It's a little ridiculous to argue that comedy or television can be important, and Louis C.K. would probably scoff at the idea--but truly, Louie feels kind of important. And at the same time, it's really, really funny. --Bret Fetzer

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare Yourself Before Buying 8 July 2011
By JPE
Format:Blu-ray
'Louie' has been described as a comedy, and in certain areas even a 'sitcom'. Let's be clear from the start though - this could be one of the weirdest, most genuinely unusual shows ever made. Kudos must go to FX in the US for giving Louis CK free reign to write and direct, because what he has produced is truly a love it or hate it show. Even if you're familiar with his stand up, don't take that as a guarantee you'll enjoy this (it's not like Ray Romano in Everybody Loves Raymond or Jerry Seinfeld in his show, or even CK's own Lucky Louie).

The show takes the format each episode of a mix of stand-up segments and some vignettes from Louis' life. There's no link between each scene and often no recurring characters other than CK himself. It could be anything (an excruciating first date, or CK getting a visit from his mother, or a disastrous attempt at acting) but often involves CK mocking himself or putting himself in some mortifying situation. The tone of the comedy is one thing that often comes closest to his stand up segments - honest, edgy and frequently uncomfortable. Also, some of the scenes will veer into almost drama-like territory. Don't expect the traditional set-up/punch line format of other shows either - CK isn't afraid to drag out scenes until you're not actually sure you should be finding it funny (note the scene where he dresses down a heckler).

Then there's the 'God' episode...not really any laughs here but an intense flashback to his childhood when a nun takes extra steps to help her classroom understand Jesus' suffering. A heavy, intimate episode - you wonder what FX execs thought when they saw this one.

I am sorry about the title of this review but if you didn't like it you might not like this show.
The comedian makes far too many jokes about farts, s****ing, masturbation...Many times he adds gestures
to the jokes. If you don't like or can't stand this kind of humour, then don't order this dvd.

I got it from a library and am not looking forward for a second season of Louie.
The show consists of stand ups alternated with a story more or less related to the stand ups. The comedian says, in the extra features,
that his show has a unique format. This is not true. Many episodes of "Seinfeld", broadcast many years ago, also had a stand up in the beggining
followed by a story more or less related to the stand up. The dvd has subtitles in English, what is quite handy when American actors start to mumble.

"Louie" has a format similar to "Seinfeld" but it doesn't have the elegance or genius of "Seinfeld". I say elegance because I can't imagine any of Seinfeld's characters
moving their hands or mouths in order to visually represent s****ing in a toilet or masturbating.

The stories are, in the beginning, quite funny especially because they don't have the vulgarity of the stand ups. But later in the season the stories
become as vulgar and gross as the stand ups. But it is not only the vulgarity of the stand ups that puts me off. The comedian says very gross and vulgar jokes but,
at the same time, is politically correct. So his humour, whilst many times so gross, is also tamed by political correctness and this combination makes for a mediocre show.
.
TV comedies, the really creative ones, can be very funny and modern without having to resort to vulgarity on a constant basis. Two examples: "30 Rock" and "Arrested Development".

3.0 out of 5 stars Why is the DVD bleeped? 24 April 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Given how strong some of the situations depicted in Louis CK's award-winning comedy series are, why is the bad language bleeped?

5.0 out of 5 stars TV doesn't get more original 8 Nov 2011
By Spencer
Format:Blu-ray
I love this series so much. It's original, brutally honest and funny. If you like watching intelligent TV then this is about as good as it gets. I won't add any more than that as JPE has put it all down in his excellent review above.

1.0 out of 5 stars at best, is an ad or trailer for an episode 15 July 2014

Are you serious?? This lasts for two minutes and, at best, is an ad or trailer for an episode. It is a disgrace that you would charge for this. Watch it. Watch it. Can you have the nerve to charge for this??

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't call it a sitcom 5 Jun 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Sometimes more sad than funny, too many fart-balls-dick-s*** jokes, but this is still great TV. It changes sitcom I'm such way that you can't really call it a sitcom anymore

2.0 out of 5 stars not the best 22 Nov 2013
By sean paul mccann VINE VOICE
Format:DVD
I am a fan of louie ck, that guy is funny, crude, clever and filthy and yet so likeable. Thats a talent in itself. Upon getting this dvd i felt excited and after 13 episodes i felt a bit underwhelmed if the truth be told. The episodes are about 20-23 minutes along and mix some stand up with a flat enough crowd in attendance and the clips of louie in his world. If you compare this to curb your enthusiasm for example which is similar in its cringe worthy feel at times and the way its filmed there is a notable difference that holds this back. The support cast in curb are class, there was no one to really bounce of louie, his brother is ok but not great. This show shines a light at louie and while it is good in parts, others didnt interest me that much. I will keep an eye out for season 2 when its on region 2.

I couldn't say if this is comedy or drama. It's none and both at the same time. It's quirky, it's funny, it's endearing and heart-breaking all at once. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny
Louie CK brings everything up to a different level. Mayby not for everyone, but for a 38 year old with kids, its probably the best TV-laugh you can find.
