Product Description

Mike goes to university with high hopes and ideals, but his dreams of life there rapidly disintegrate. Isolated, he is adopted by a mysterious young man who haunts the campus and fuels Mike's disenchantment with everything and everyone around him. He abandons his course to live with like-minded youngsters in Nuremberg where he is ecstatically happy. But his happiness is short lived as his young mind is derailed into darker territory where he becomes a tool of extreme anti-capitalists.

From the outset, Mike's intuitive mother knows that all is not well with her son. At last, she persuades her husband to visit the university, but Mike has vanished. And so the search begins: a search that takes Mike's father to Germany, where he discovers something about himself, but fails to find his son. That search then leads him back to his wife and to tragedy.

Is it possible for a young man to undergo a fundamental character change in just a few months? Mike spent his formative years in an outwardly stable, entirely sheltered, but mostly friendless environment. In the background was an angelic sister who died young, a doting father and a mother with a guilty secret. He grew up in a cocoon of parental love.

Then Mike suffered the crushing disappointment of rejection as he leaves home for the first time. Most students experience intense homesickness. Mike experiences violence, illness, rejection and loneliness without relief. And then he makes a friend, a young man who feeds his adolescent mind with revolutionary thoughts that align perfectly with his receptive mental state. He also finds solace in smoking cannabis, golden dreams, and the angelic presence of his long dead sister. Persecuted and derided, he abandons the student life, taking a path that leads to Rome and his ultimate sacrifice.

Weaving a fascinating web around the lives of Mike and his parents, this novel is not for the faint-hearted. It has grand peaks and troughs and is unrelenting in its exposure of the thoughts and feelings of the main characters. Set in the year 2000, it focuses on highly topical subjects of the 21st century, yet also touches on fantasy: a combination that creates a good read and a memorable story.

More About the Author

I write all sorts of stuff. In the past I wrote technical books, but couldn't resist squeezing in some off-beat content to provide a little light relief. I managed to get a mention of Marilyn Monroe into a book on computers and telephones!

Nowadays I am fancy free, though my first book followed on from my technical phase. It is about Hedy Lamarr the famous film star and inventor.

I have written a couple of books about Oxford and one about Stow-on-the-Wold: my two homes in England. I have also written two travel books: one autobiographical, the other fictional, though firmly based on my experiences in Turkey.

And then there are my novels. I've written three and I guess my favourite is Shaken by China, the latest one. Like the Turkey book this one is solidly based on true experience. There should be a category for this sort of writing: autobiographical fiction or something. I've also written a science fiction novel (part of a possible trilogy).

Just now I am enjoying life as a city guide in Oxford. My favourite job is a pub tour: they pay me go to the pub, buy me beer and all I have to do is tell stories - nirvana. I am also dabbling with geology and anything else that takes my fancy: so much to do in this city, so few hours.

Besides Oxford I spend some time in the Cotswolds which has glorious walking country and in Spain where I am building a stone hut (and a stack of notes for another book).

5.0 out of 5 stars excllent unusual read- page turner! 30 Oct 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked this up on my kindle without huge expectations especially given the generic title- but I was blown away. It was the most unusual and interesting novel I've read in ages. Great characterization and a fascinating take on youth in revolt. The author has great scene setting skills and I read it straight through. The character of Bill is fascinating- ambiguous and unsettling- read it.
