Lost by Michael Robotham tells the story of a child abduction when both the victim's family and the abductors are criminals. The protagonist is Vincent Ruiz a character familiar to readers of other Robtoham books such as "shattered" and "suspect". Robotham has a talent for dialogue and an eye for detail on which the plot rides along at a heady lick. A shame that this novel has too many genre clichés to be fully satisfying; for example, the flawed and wounded hero with a slowly returning memory or the cod psychology that explains criminality as largely a matter of nurture. These, however, would be forgiveable features in an otherwise good thriller. For once though, Robotham fluffs the ending and leaving us with a disappointing anti-climax. This makes it hard to recommend wholeheartedly the book but I can recommend the author.

I heard about this guy in dispatches - the new hot thriller writer on the block. I'm always wary of the hype but for once you can believe it. 'LOST' is intelligent, moving, funny, tense and absorbing.

Inspector Vincent Ruiz is a heart breaking hero, haunted by past failures. A missing girl, Mickey Carlyle, comes to symbolise all the other missing children in his life. If he can find Mickey he can make up for all those he couldn't save.

So much happens in this book, I won't even begin to elaborate on the plot. It is enough to emphasise the sheer quality of the writing and the richness of the characters. I'm off to buy Robotham's first book. This guy is a keeper!

A cop is nearly killed and is still suffering recent-term amnesia when he leaves hospital. He is made to feel very unwelcome by his superiors who believe he remains stupidly obsessed with trying to find a girl long given up as missing or dead. He tries to recollect what happened to him and to find the link, if any, to the missing girl - he does this with unofficial help, having lost his position on the force, and the support of friends and even some aides. This is a very well-constructed story, with plenty of twists and turns, which keeps you guessing until the end. The writing is unexceptional but contains it share of wit and the story-line development and characterisations are impressive : it would be difficult not to warm to Vincent Ruiz and his Professor friend Joe. There must therefore be a sequel looming and I very much look forward to it. 9/10
