I'm assuming that you're already a Danzig fan if you're looking at this collection from his unreleased back catalogue. First observation, some of Danzig's recent albums have been vulnerable to the criticism that, though differing from each other, the tracks were a bit homogenous, i.e., samey. Because this collection covers the breadth of Danzig's history, throughout the recording of different sessions, it completely sidesteps this issue. It is, of course, one of their most internally diverse releases. This is important because even more recent tracks which might have been lost among others on the albums for which they were originally intended inevitably stand out more in their own right when placed in this context. (Tip: Place your whole Danzig collection on random play, certain tracks stick out a lot more that way.)
Next point, you might be wondering before buying if this is all the scraps left over from previous sessions, i.e., second-rate stuff. Definitely not! Glenn Danzig himself makes it clear on the sleeve notes that tracks were previously unreleased for a variety of reasons, often merely because they didn't fit in with the rest of an album, or because of opposition from Rick Rubin the original producer. In other words, many of these are clearly better than many of the previous Danzig material, and in some cases they may include some of Danzig's very best songs. These are really good quality tracks. There are also a few interesting cover versions, Buick McKane is a classic.
I think this selection might even appeal to people who are new to Danzig, but it is certainly a "must have" for existing fans. There are a lot of tracks, most of them completely unreleased, even the alternate versions of previously issued tracks are worth having. If you like Danzig, especially if you want more of the earlier stuff, you definitely won't be disappointed. I felt I was getting a lot for my money, it almost sounds like a double-disc of "best of" material, but most of it was totally new to me.
The only criticism I have is that the photos of Glenn wearing black marigolds and the topless girls in the booklet just looks really silly and doesn't do justice to the quality of this band, it might prevent people from taking the music as seriously as it deserves.
Anyway, if you're not sure, just buy it; it is one of their best and full of stuff to keep you interested.
Don.
