Books, and theological / spirituality books in particular perhaps are very much matters of personal preference. This book had its origins in a Lent course, and it shows. What might have worked as a basis for discussions over, say, four weeks has been stretched beyond reason to create this text. The connexions often feel contrived, literary references, influenced one feels by the author's son, and psychological insights presumably derived from his wife sit uncomfortably - I would have preferred to have had their insights direct, rather than second hand through Mr Sadgrove.
So, some interesting ideas, but too much that is unconvincing, to the extent that doubts about the weaker material obscure what are some genuinely thought-provoking concepts.

I found this book invaluable. It gave me fresh insights into those early biblical stories which I've known for most of my life. Michael Sadgrove's profound scholarship is presented in clear language that is easily understood. It was recommended to me by another priest and she spoke about it with such enthusiasm that I ordered it on the same day. Its a wonderful book and has moved me considerably.
