I wanted this book to be a tribute to the shipbuilding heritage of the Tyne, and also the men of the Tyne who endured many dangers and hardships in the yards. - Ken Smith

4.0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Era 7 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Sometimes it is easy to forget what a great industrial heritage Britain has. High up amongst that is shipbuilding and its associated repair industry. The many establishments that were engaged in this business along the banks of the River Tyne are commemorated in this excellent and well illustrated book. Unlike many of its genre it avoids obsessive detail and does not wallow in pity for a bygone era. It tells the tale in a simple and straightforward manner with many descriptions of what the work was like and the memories of those who worked in the yards. The authors know what they are talking about and obviously have a great affection for the area and the people living there.Recommended.

Good photos and text. My 83 year old Father really enjoyed it. He grew up in the area and worked in some of the Tyne shipyards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Takes you back!! 27 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought this for my 90 year old father in law who spent all his working life as a riveter up and down the River Tyne eventually ending up at Clelands, this really bought back so many memories for him and I know he has spent many hours going through this book since I gave it to him for Christmas. Really fascinating to look at the maps of the Tyne and just realise how many ship building & ship repair yard there used to be. Buy it now and give it to those who worked on the Tyne it will bring a smile to their face and a tear to their eye.
