Product Description

Lost London is the story of the city as told through the buildings, parks and palaces that are no longer with us. Places like the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, the leading venue for public entertainment in the city for over 200 years, or the Palace of Whitehall whose 1500 rooms made it the largest royal residence in Europe until it was destroyed by fire at the end of the 17th century. From bull rings to ice fairs, plague pits to molly houses, this is a fascinating journey through London's forgotten past, unearthing the extraordinary stories that lie beneath familiar streets as well as shining a light in the city's darkest corners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas comes early 15 Jun 2012

Format:Hardcover
An early problem solver of what to get the family for Christmas. Not only is Guard's book packed with fascinating details and stories about old London town, it'll be a great source for the Boxing Day quiz. Who wouldn't have loved to sup in Fleet Street's The Devil Public House where 'insipid poetry' was forbidden or visited the Diorama in Camden with its trompe l'oeils operated by a lad with a ram engine? This is a London to be cherished and explored.

5.0 out of 5 stars A browsable treasure trove 3 July 2012
By Stan
Format:Hardcover
I saw this book passing a local bookshop window and I've now had it for a couple of weeks - I think I've already browsed through every page. It's great fun for people who know London well and enjoy the thought experiment of grafting something from the past onto a modern location - a real sense of the past in the present. It's arranged place by place, and the moment you pick it up it feels like a book to dip into with pleasure. It's not lavish but there's plenty of good illustrations - I even got out my A to Z to match Guard's entries with the locations I didn't know. Guard writes in a concise, informative and informal style, he wears his considerable learning lightly, and it's quite simply full of really interesting stuff that I had never known. Wd definitely recommend for anyone who's interested in London, especially if you're not in the mood to take on a magnum opus from Ackroyd, Porter or the scarcely readable Sinclair.

3.0 out of 5 stars Copied from other publications 30 Dec 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is an amalgamation of other publications.Obviously the author did not associate with anyone mentioned in the book for obvious reasons (they are all dead). He has callated information from other publications/internet sources and made a book from this, which I found to be slightly disappointing!

This book is a kind of directory of places that were of interest in the past. Each place has a fairly brief resume. Personally, I got bored with it.
