Review

"The book's magic . . . lies in Aguiar's precise, often lyrical descriptions. A native and resident of Bermuda, she writes with authority about daily life in the tropics. . . . Aguiar uses her knack for realistic details equally well in the magical parts. . . . "The Lost Island of Tamarind" has a gentle spirit, tempering its dangers with warmth."--"The New York Times Book Review""" "Aguiar's exciting debut novel is a cross between "Peter P"an and "Lost" . . . Developed with seeming ease, each new character advances the plot logically and fluidly. The storytelling, intricate as it is, builds to a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. All signs point to a sequel--one that readers won't want to miss."--"Publishers Weekly""" "Each detail of this fantasy is crafted with care; readers will be drawn into this dangerous, magical world where anything is possible and nothing can be fully explained . . . Young people will be transported to a world so different from the one they current

Three children. Alone on the ocean waves, after a fierce storm throws their parents from the Pamela Jane into the icy waters below. Maya, Simon and Penny now face a wild rescue adventure that will lead them to a truly magical place . . .

Imagine an island with green mountains looming over pink sandy beaches and tide pools lit by the moon. An island with the darkest of secrets, where pirates lurk and jaguars roam – and a precious stone holds a power that is both wondrous and terrifying. This is where the children must go.

No one from the Outside has escaped the island before. Danger is everywhere. But they can’t turn back now. Could you?

Thirteen-year-old Maya Nelson would like nothing more than to live on land, go to school, and sit at an actual table to eat a meal once in a while. Her outgoing younger brother, Simon, may be fine with living on a boat and traveling the world with their marine biologist parents, but lately, Maya's grown tired of having no privacy and none of the normal things kids should have.

Her situation has only gotten worse since Penny was born, making the small boat even more cramped. But Maya has a plan: after they drop off the new round of wildlife samples at the Marine Station, they'll be heading to Bermuda to visit Grandma Pearl, and Maya has made her parents promise to talk to her grandmother about letting Maya stay on land for awhile - at least long enough to go to school and make some friends for the first time in her life.

But then their boat, the Pamela Jane, hits a terrible storm, and Maya's parents are swept overboard. Now with damaged instruments, no radio contact, and no sense of where they are, Maya and Simon somehow manage to land the Pamela Jane on an island and immediately begin to look for help.

However, no sooner have they wrapped up Penny, gathered some supplies, and stepped off the boat do they realize that they've ended up in a place like no other.

Deadly jungle creatures, pirates patrolling the waters, and a witch who steals children are not the only things plaguing the hidden island of Tamarind, but Maya and her siblings will have to band together and draw on every ounce of strength they have if they ever want to find their parents...and avoid staying on the island for a long, long time.

With dynamic and incredibly resourceful main characters coupled with an intriguing storyline that spreads beyond the boundaries of the page, this book is bound to captivate any young reader who loves a good adventure. It holds its own among other popular tales of castaways, with a bit of magic and mystery mixed in.

I bought this book for my ten year old daughter as she loves both adventure stories and animals. This book is more of an adventure book, although animals do feature. She was totally absorbed in the story and read it in a couple of days whilst on holiday. I then read it and found it to be a very enjoyable read. It has some similarites to Michael Morpurgo's 'Kensuke's Kingdom' which is a family favourite of ours. This book, though, is based more on fantasy, whilst exploring the relationship between brothers, sisters, parents, friends and adults alike. I would recommend this book to both able readers, parents and teachers - much scope within it to explore in the classroom (particularly as there is also a website dedicated to the Island of Tamarind)!

WOW!! 30 Oct 2008
By J. D. Mayor - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
What can I say - Nadia Aguiar has written a wonderful, wonderful book that will appeal to all age groups. Although written for young adults - all ages will enjoy this entertaining and totally engrossing story of 3 young children who find themselves in another world completely different to the one that they know. "The Lost Island of Tamarind" will not only "capture" your mind but your imagination as well. The story is so beautifully written that it comes to life right before your eyes! Children will want their parents to read it, parents will want their children to read it and if the child is too young to read it themselves, they will thoroughly enjoy having it read to them......even my 82 year old mother is loving the book!

Like a Trunk of Hidden Treasures 17 Nov 2008
By Julie Bazalsky - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I am not a fast reader, but I got through this book in a week. At the beginning of the book, I couldn't decide whether to read on and see what would happen next or put the book down so I would have more to savour later. As I swept throught the book, there were hidden treasures around every corner. The details of this fantastic world made me want to revisit it again and again. I can't wait for the next book!

Wicked Adventure Story 3 Oct 2008
By Lee Ward - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a great story that has everything I like, adventure, mystery, and fantasy. The main character, Maya, has has a lot to deal with looking after Simon and Penny, and gets stressed, but is nice. There are tons of weird animals, danger, excitement, witches and pirates. The kids meet all kinds of strange and interesting characters on their journey. Helix is my favorite. He was orphaned but now is a cool guy who knows what to do when things get scary. Tamarind is awesome and I would like to go there. Find out how the children avoid getting eaten by jaguars, escape from an enchantress, and survive a civil war. I would read it again.
