Product Description

Product Description

Do you speak "business" or "IT"? Perhaps you speak a little of both. In today's connected world, where business and IT are fused, chances are that if you're a business or IT executive, or someone working to transform a business, you speak a little of both. But what if there was a "third" language? A common language that was natural for both "business" and "IT," straightforward enough to use, yet sophisticated enough to work in today's connected world? What if such a language only comprised a handful of words? With such a language, the "loss in translation" between the business and IT would happen less, because both would be using the same language. With such a language, business outcomes and transformations would become much more achievable. This handbook describes what this language is-the language of Information Systems for the 21st century.

Putting People First 24 Mar 2008
The fact that failures in major IT projects and programmes come as little surprise indicates that something is amis in the way we approach and manage such initiatives. The usual solutions offered focus on improved implementation but Carl Bate and Nigel Green don't offer more of the same - rather they provide insights, honed from practical experience in major IT enabled business change projects, that suggest a new way and one that focuses on the human dimensions of change. VPEC-T is more a way of thinking than a methodology, but it is no worse for that. Thought provoking and recommended to all those looking to move beyond the 'technology, process, people' paradigm (where people come last).

In these uncertain times VPEC-T is a tool that has emerged to help adapt to the challenges we face in the ever increasingly interconnected, dynamic and complex world.

Lost in Translation is the first of a series of books on the communication framework VPEC-T. The framework was first devised to bridge the communication gulf between the business and information technology sides of information systems, enterprise and solution architecture, engagements. Tackling the dimensions of Values Policy Events Content and Trust (VPEC-T) of any business issue, helping to surface conflicts between the business and IT stakeholders groups, a simple and powerful communication tool.

It is a well noted that the concepts that populate the differing shibboleth's used by business and IT communities often result in miscommunication, hostility and mistrust. Exploring the VPEC-T dimensions of an issue ensures accurate communication of Values and therefore avoids bad feeling building Trust between the groups. The early surfacing of conflicting Values being an important aim, as the later the conflict is surfaced the more costly it shall be to remedy and the greater the impact on Trust between the groups. If not surfaced early in the information system development life cycle (ISDLC) conflict, emerging in later phases of the ISDLC, say after construction is complete, shall be considerably more expensive to remediate.

The VPEC-T is a mediation tool used to enable accurate communication of concepts between stakeholders groups with differing conceptual frameworks. The conceptual frameworks expressed through the groups "in-crowd" jargon constitute one, or a number of, contextual viewpoint(`s) from which the respective groups view an issue often to the exclusion of others who are not party to the shibboleth.

The original application of the VPEC-T was conceived as a mechanism for finding common ground between the business and IT stakeholder groups in the consideration of business information systems. However, as has already been noted, VPEC-T is applicable in facilitating communication between divergent groups in relation to any domain. The VPEC-T is a communication framework and a mediation tool that can be used to look at any issue bridging many divergent viewpoints. Through the application of broader Systems Thinking and Complex Systems it has applicability to any system concerned with information, through the gamut from G8 summits to marriage guidance sessions and including, its ongoing applicability to, and origins in, business information systems.

Paradigm shift? 13 May 2008
This is a genuinely different way of looking at information systems. Much of architecture and requirements analysis is focussed on the "how" rather than the "what". This book redresses the balance and provides a novel way of understanding how people and organisations interact and what information systems need to do.

It will certainly benefit requirements analysis, IT strategy and architecture. Also, the approach could be used to understand the nature of inter business and network collaboration - where implicit conflicts lie and how to build trust.
