Amazon Review

Peter Davies, author of All Played Out spends a season with the Doncaster Belles and finds a unique group of people with an abundance of talent and a vividly earthly humour. They play hard in the pit villages and nightclubs of South Yorkshire, they play hard on tatty pitches in run- down suburbs and industrial estates--but they play for love too, and to a standard that could convert even the most blinkered chauvinist.

About the Book
"I Lost My Heart to the Belles is that rare thing in modern publishing: a true labour of love" --GQ

"Witty, warm, wise and inspiring ... This is that rarest of sports books: a cracking good read that will appeal to the reader without the slightest interest in sport" -- Yorkshire Post

"Not for the faint-hearted, the Belles can out-bloke the fellas ... risking lifelong disablement all in pursuit of the beautiful game" --For Him

"A Fascinating story" --South Yorkshire Times

Product Description

What kind of women play football? Factory workers, bank clerks, policewomen, students and shop assistants, they come together on a Sunday united by a passion for the game all too woefully absent from the money-drenched circus of professional sport. Fired by a Collective clan, an infectious joie de vivre, over the past dozen years the Doncaster Belles have been successful beyond the dreams of any other women's team. Pete Davies spends a season with the Belles - and finds a unique group of people with an abundance of talent, and a vividly earthy sense of humour. They play hard in the pit villages and nightclubs of South Yorkshire, they play hard on tatty pitches in run-down suburbs and industrial estates - but they play for love too, and to a standard that could convert the most blinkered chauvinist. At a time when more and more women are both watching and playing football, this club have been trailblazers; in this rich, diverting and passionate book, Davies make it plain why you too, once you've met them, will lose your heart to the Belles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lose your heart? Perhaps... 17 Dec 2003
Format:Hardcover
This book tells it as it is - women's football from inside the game. Pete Davies knows the team inside out and writes from the heart, sharing their lives, their hopes and their dreams.
I've read this book, and re-read it again and again. The only negative I can find is the repetitive nature of the book - as Davies tells each of the girls' stories, the emphasis he places on their struggles and perseverance becomes a little wearing. I may be a little too cynical but we get the point, Pete!
Overall though, this is a compassionate and intriguing insight.

I bought this book when it was first published. My daughter wasn't a great reader but loved sport and played at a high level. I therefore bought her memoirs and autobiographies of sportspeople and other inspiring people to encourage her to enjoy reading. This book was one of both our favourites. Having lent it and not had it returned some time ago, I was feeling withdrawal symptoms as I'd not read it in so long. Watching the successes of the England Women's Football team reignited my desire to read the book once more, so I bought it for the second time.

loved the story from day 1 of the belles story, read the book after hearing about the belles plight in the top flight ie getting thrown out to the lower division, really felt that I could drink and relax and enjoy the belles company off the pitch and really get passionate about supporting them, like others I felt it dragged on a bit but hey you get to meet all the characters in the club, best of luck to all at Doncaster belles
