Whew! I bought this recording without knowing much about Ernie and Eddie and without being familiar with the records. The fact that it was on the excellent Kent label meant that it wasn't too much of a risk.
Speculation turned to joy as great song after great song blew out the cobwebs in my hi-fi. I bought it thinking that there might be one or two gems, but it is packed with must-have soul songs. There is not one bad recording on this CD. I questioned the wisdom of putting on a cover version of "Tell it like it is", but it is a different song in the hands of these two experts.

The late, lamented Dave Godin rated Eddie Campbell & Ernie Johnson as the greatest deep soul duo ever and they were the only artists to feature on all four volumes of his seminal 'Deep Soul Treasures' series; this 2002 compilation was the culmination of Godin's personal ambition to bring Eddie & Ernie's scattered recordings from 1961-72 'under one roof'. Eddie & Ernie's career was dogged by bad luck and wrong turns, but it wasn't for lack of effort - they tried just about everything: downhome Southern soul, up-tempo stompers, sessions with big time New York producers Juggy Murray and Richard Gottehrer, major label releases on Chess and Columbia but despite some fleeting successes (they were no mean songwriters and The Animals recorded their track 'Outcast' in 1966), none of it stuck. They had their lighter moments but on the whole these songs are not the sound of lives lived on the sunny side of the street, and it's no great surprise that Eddie Campbell drank himself to death before he reached 40. It was a tragic waste but we should be grateful that Eddie & Ernie left an indelible legacy of truly haunting music, some of the very deepest of deep soul.

NB Godin wanted to get as much of Eddie & Ernie's output into the public domain as possible so this CD doesn't duplicate any of the other eight tracks available elsewhere on Kent compilations. Unfortunately this means that 'Lost Friends' omits two of their greatest moments: 'I'm Goin' for Myself' (available on Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol.1: Taken from the Vaults) and 'Time Waits for No-One' (from The Birth of Soul Vol.2). However that's just all the more incentive to buy these excellent CDs too.
